Okayama Momotaro Airport (RJOB/OKJ) is a large public airport serving Okayama City in western Honshu, Japan, offering a single long instrument runway with ILS. It handles a mix of domestic trunk routes and a handful of international services, making it a useful IFR destination for simulator pilots flying the San'in and Seto Inland Sea region.
Okayama Momotaro Airport, known officially as Okayama Airport and locally as Okayama Momotaro Airport, is a large civil airport serving Okayama Prefecture on the Japanese main island of Honshu. It replaced an older waterfront airport when it opened in March 1988 and today handles scheduled domestic and international jet services, giving simulator pilots a substantial single-runway ILS approach to fly in a scenic setting between the Chugoku mountains and the Seto Inland Sea.
The airport lies about 18 kilometres northwest of central Okayama City and roughly 11.5 kilometres northwest of Okayama Station, in a hilly area of Kita Ward. It sits close to the Okayama interchange on the Sanyo Expressway, around ten minutes away by road, placing it within easy reach of the city while being set apart from the coastal urban area.
The airport has a single physical runway, 07/25, aligned roughly east-west. It is a hard-surfaced, lit runway approximately 9774 feet (07) and 9773 feet (25) in length, more than adequate for the widebody and narrowbody jet traffic that uses the field. An ILS is available for runway 07.
Approach control is provided by Takamatsu Approach on 120.4 MHz, and the tower frequency at Okayama is 124.3 MHz. Runway 07 is served by an ILS, supporting instrument approaches into the field.
Okayama Airport opened in March 1988 as a replacement for the original Okayama Airport, which had been located on the waterfront in what is now Minami Ward, Okayama City. The move brought operations to the current inland site near the Sanyo Expressway, where the longer runway and modern facilities could better support jet services.
Okayama Momotaro Airport remains an active commercial airport with scheduled domestic services to Tokyo Haneda, Sapporo New Chitose and Okinawa Naha, alongside international routes to Seoul Incheon, Shanghai Pudong, Hong Kong and Taipei Taoyuan, plus periodic charter flights to Kaohsiung. Ground transport to and from Okayama and Kurashiki stations is coordinated with the flight schedule, reflecting its role as a working regional gateway rather than a general aviation field.
