Osaka International Airport, still widely known by its historic name Itami, sits in the crowded northern suburbs of Osaka and remains Japan's principal domestic hub for the Kansai region. For a simulator pilot it offers a dramatic contrast to its offshore sister field, Kansai International, with a compact urban setting, twin parallel runways and an ILS approach hemmed in by the city.

Overview

Osaka International Airport, ICAO code RJOO and IATA code ITM, lies on the boundary of Osaka and Hyogo prefectures and has long served as the domestic gateway for the Kansai region, connecting Osaka with major Japanese cities. Although Kansai International Airport now handles almost all international traffic for the area, Itami remains a busy, tightly built airfield surrounded by the dense suburbs of Itami and Toyonaka, making it an interesting study in urban airport operations for a VFR or IFR sim pilot.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits at coordinates 34.7844N, 135.439E at an elevation of 39 feet, in the northern suburbs of the Osaka conurbation, close to the cities of Itami and Toyonaka. It lies within busy Kansai terminal airspace, with Kansai Approach and Departure controlling traffic inbound and outbound from the field; a dedicated terminal control area frequency is also published. Kansai International Airport, built offshore in Osaka Bay, lies to the south and now absorbs the bulk of international movements that Itami's constrained urban site could no longer accommodate.

Runways

Osaka International has two parallel hard-surfaced runway pairs, both lit. The main pair, 14R/32L, is 10,103 feet long, with an ILS serving the approach to 32L. The shorter parallel pair, 14L/32R, measures 6,587 feet on the 14L threshold and 6,690 feet on 32R.

Radio & Navigation

Kansai Approach works inbound traffic on 120.45 MHz, with Kansai Departure on 119.5 MHz. The tower operates on 118.1 MHz, ground on 121.7 MHz, and clearance delivery on 118.8 MHz. A GCA frequency of 127.5 MHz and a terminal control area frequency of 121.1 MHz are also published, together with an ATIS broadcast on 128.6 MHz. The ILS on runway 32L supports instrument approaches into the airfield.

History

The airfield began life as the No. 2 Osaka Airport before being fully returned to Japanese control in March 1958, when it was renamed Osaka Airport, becoming Osaka International Airport in July 1959. It saw its first passenger jet service in 1964 with Thai Airways International Caravelle flights, though its runways and terminals were never able to accommodate the larger jets such as the Douglas DC-8 or Boeing 707 that were already operating elsewhere in Japan by the end of the 1950s. Hemmed in by the densely populated suburbs of Itami and Toyonaka, the airport could not be physically expanded, and mounting noise complaints from surrounding residents led planners in the 1970s to develop an offshore replacement. This work culminated in the opening of Kansai International Airport in 1994, built specifically to relieve overcrowding at Itami and to remove much of the noise burden from its urban neighbours.

The Airfield Today

Itami continues to function as Osaka's principal domestic airport, handling frequent connections to cities across Japan, while Kansai International has taken over almost all international services for the region. The airport is marketed particularly toward domestic business travellers, reflecting its continued convenience for city-centre access despite its constrained site.
