JMSDF Atsugi Air Base, also known as Naval Air Facility Atsugi, is a joint-use military airfield in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, shared by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and the United States Navy. It offers a single long, ILS-equipped hard runway and sits close to the towns of Ayase and Yamato, making it a notable stop for simulator pilots exploring military aviation in the greater Tokyo area.

Overview

JMSDF Atsugi Air Base, known to the US Navy as Naval Air Facility Atsugi, is a joint military airfield located between the towns of Ayase and Yamato in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. The base is operated jointly by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and the United States Navy, and it does not handle scheduled airline service. For a simulator pilot, its interest lies in its long, ILS-fitted runway and its role as a shared military aviation facility close to the Tokyo conurbation.

Airspace & Location

The airfield lies in Kanagawa Prefecture, near Ayase and Yamato, within the wider Tokyo/Kanto region of Japan. Approach and departure control in the area is provided by Yokota, indicating that Atsugi's traffic is integrated with the broader military air traffic control structure covering the Kanto plain.

Runways

Atsugi has a single physical runway, 01/19, measuring 8002 feet with a hard surface and runway lighting. An ILS is available for runway 01, giving instrument approach capability into the field. Field elevation is 187 feet.

Radio & Navigation

Radio services include an Air-to-Ground frequency on 305 MHz (callsign BIDDY), Atsugi Approach on 123.8 MHz, and Yokota Approach/Departure on 122.1 MHz. An ATIS broadcast is available on 24.68 MHz, Ground control operates on 141.2 MHz, and Tower operates on 126.2 MHz. A PMSV weather/Metro frequency is also published on 30.6 MHz.

The Airfield Today

Atsugi remains an active military installation under joint Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and United States Navy control, with no scheduled airline service. As a military facility, prior permission is required for any visiting flight.
