The airport's history is inseparable from the volcanic activity of Mount Oyama, which forced a lengthy suspension of services, making it a field with a genuinely dramatic backstory for anyone planning a visit in the simulator.

The airport sits on Miyakejima, one of the Izu Islands, about 19 km east of Miyake village. History

Miyakejima Airport's modern story is dominated by the volcanic eruption of Mount Oyama on 14 July 2000, after which flights from Haneda were suspended because of dangerously high sulfuric gas concentrations in the surrounding air. The airport remained without regular Haneda services for almost eight years while gas levels were monitored; scheduled flights resumed in April 2008 once sulfuric gas readings had fallen below 0.2 ppm, restoring the island's principal air link.

The Airfield Today

Today the airport is served by New Central Airservice on routes to Chofu on the mainland, and by Toho Air Service linking Miyakejima with Mikurajima and Oshima; a helicopter service also operates via Izu Oshima. Passenger and cargo movements are modest, reflecting the airport's role as a lifeline connection for a small island community rather than a major traffic hub.
