MY FS FLIGHTS
Cheongju International Airport (RKTU/CJJ) is a joint civil-military aerodrome in Cheongwon-gu, Cheongju, in South Korea's North Chungcheong Province, serving the wider Daejeon-Sejong-Cheongju region. It shares its long concrete runways with the Republic of Korea Air Force's 17th Fighter Wing, making it an unusual and operationally busy destination for a simulator pilot to study.
Cheongju International Airport sits at the centre of the Korean peninsula, roughly midway between Seoul's airports and the west coast, and is operated jointly as a civil gateway and as an active military airbase (K-59/G-513) hosting the ROKAF's 17th Fighter Wing and its F-35A fighters. For a visiting VFR or IFR pilot in the simulator, the field's dual identity, long parallel-configured runways and mixed civil-military traffic make it a distinctive study, though photography and videography of the installation are strictly prohibited due to its military role.
The airport lies at Ipsang-ri, Naesu-eup, Cheongwon-gu, Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do (North Chungcheong Province), at coordinates 36.7164 N, 127.4990 E, with a field elevation of 190 feet. It is positioned centrally in South Korea, roughly 165 km from Gimpo International Airport, 175 km from Incheon International Airport and 170 km from Gunsan Airport, and is described as the base airport for the central region and a designated alternate for the Seoul metropolitan airports.
Cheongju has two parallel hard-surfaced runways, both lit. The northern pair, 06L/24R, is 8,935 feet long, while the southern pair, 06R/24L, is 8,923 feet long. There is no ILS at the field.
Cheongju Approach (RKTU_APP) operates on 134 MHz, with the wider approach and departure control shared under the callsign Jungwon Approach/Departure, also on 134 MHz. Cheongju Tower (RKTU_TWR) is on 118.7 MHz and Cheongju Ground (RKTU_GND) on 120.65 MHz. ATIS is broadcast on 128.85 MHz, and an ACP frequency, callsign Brickwall, is listed on 120 MHz.
The site began as a military airbase, built in September 1978. Plans for an international airport followed, with construction starting in 1984 and completed in December 1996; Cheongju International Airport formally opened on 28 April 1997. During the mid-1980s the site was considered as a possible location for South Korea's principal international airport before Incheon was chosen instead. The airport has continued to operate as a combined civil and military facility, with the Republic of Korea Air Force's 17th Fighter Wing, flying F-35A fighters, based there alongside civil airline operations.
Cheongju remains a joint civil-military airport, with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport as owner and the Korea Airports Corporation as civil operator, alongside the Republic of Korea Air Force. It serves as an operating base for Aero K, Eastar Jet and T'way Air, with domestic services to Jeju and international routes to destinations in China, Japan, Taiwan and Thailand; cargo services also operate through the field. Because of its military role, photography and videography on the airport are strictly prohibited.
