Miyako Airport is a public airport on Miyako-jima (Miyako Island), part of the Miyako Islands group within Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. It is operated by Okinawa Prefecture and serves as the principal air link for the island, which is one of Okinawa's most popular year-round resort destinations. Scheduled carriers Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Japan Transocean Air and Ryukyu Air Commuter operate from the field, and in 2019 it handled around 1.74 million passengers, making it the third busiest airport in the prefecture. For a visiting VFR pilot, the airport combines a straightforward single-runway layout with an instrument approach and the scenic appeal of the surrounding coral-reef coastline.
The airport sits on Miyako-jima in the Miyako Islands, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, at coordinates 24.7828N 125.295E. Shimojishima Airport, home to a considerably longer 3,000 metre runway, lies nearby on a neighbouring islet and the two fields effectively share airspace and traffic in the area, with Shimoji Approach providing the approach control service referenced in the airport's radio setup.
The airport has a single physical runway, 04/22, of 6,531 feet with a hard surface, lit for night operations. Runway 22 is equipped with an ILS, giving instrument approach capability from that direction; runway 04 is lit but does not carry an ILS.
Approach control is provided as Shimoji Approach on 120.3 MHz, reflecting the shared approach service with the neighbouring Shimojishima Airport. Tower frequency is 118.2 MHz. Runway 22 is served by an ILS for instrument approaches.
The airport is readily identified from the air by its position on Miyako-jima amid the distinctive coral-reef coastline of the Miyako Islands, with the neighbouring Shimojishima Airport and its much longer runway serving as a useful nearby landmark when navigating the area visually.
The airfield opened in 1943 as an Imperial Japanese Navy airbase. Civilian operations began in 1956, and jet services started in 1978 using Boeing 737 aircraft. Japan Transocean Air has long provided nonstop service to Tokyo Haneda, and All Nippon Airways added its own nonstop Haneda service in 2016 using slots freed by the cessation of Hokuriku region air services following the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen.
Miyako Airport remains an active regional airport with scheduled services operated by Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways (via ANA Wings), Japan Transocean Air and Ryukyu Air Commuter, connecting Miyako to Naha, Tokyo Haneda, Ishigaki, Tarama and other points. It competes to some extent with the nearby Shimojishima Airport, which has attracted low-cost carriers such as Jetstar Japan and Skymark Airlines to the same island group.
