History

Vigan Airport was for a long period regarded by the local city government as a underused asset, generating little revenue from operations. Plans were drawn up to expand and modernise the field, partly to ease the burden of travelling to Vigan from Manila and other towns by road, and partly to support the city's growing tourism industry. Interisland Airlines began flying between Vigan and Manila on 19 March 2009, but this service was discontinued after a few months owing to low demand, and the airport then spent roughly eight years in private use. It reopened for commercial flights in February 2017, when Platinum Skies, a carrier controlled by former Ilocos Sur governor Chavit Singson, began services between Vigan and Manila from 17 February 2017, followed by a route to Basco from April 2017. In the early 2020s the airport also featured as a filming location for scenes in the ABS-CBN television programme FPJ's Ang Probinsyano. On 25 May 2022 the Department of Transportation and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines inaugurated completed development works at the airport, including an improved passenger terminal building with upgraded arrival and pre-departure areas, a new administrative building and powerhouse, and runway feature improvements, which together raised the airport's handling capacity from around 40 to 150 passengers.

Vigan Airport currently supports scheduled flights operated by Platinum Skies to Manila and Basco. Following the 2022 redevelopment, the terminal building and associated administrative facilities have been upgraded, increasing the airport's passenger handling capacity.
