Iloilo International Airport (RPVI) is the main gateway to Iloilo City and the wider Western Visayas region, located in the municipality of Cabatuan on the island of Panay. Opened in 2007 on the site of a World War II airfield, it replaced the old city-centre Mandurriao Airport and today serves as an operating base for Cebu Pacific, making it one of the busiest airports in the Philippines.
Iloilo International Airport serves Iloilo City and its metropolitan area, along with the rest of Iloilo province, from a site in the municipality of Cabatuan some 24 kilometres northwest of the city proper. Operated by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, it is classified as an international airport and is the fifth-busiest in the country, acting as the primary gateway to the island of Panay and the Western Visayas region. For a simulator pilot it offers a substantial single-runway international field with an ILS approach, set against the backdrop of Panay's rural interior.
The airport lies in the municipality of Cabatuan, Iloilo Province, on the island of Panay, roughly 24 kilometres northwest of Iloilo City. Approach control for the field is provided by Bacolod, reflecting the airport's position within the wider Western Visayas air traffic environment.
Iloilo International Airport has a single physical runway, 02/20, measuring 8,218 feet with a hard surface. Runway 20 is equipped with an ILS, giving instrument approach capability into the field; runway 02 is served visually.
Aerodrome frequency is 121 MHz. Approach and tower services are provided by Bacolod on 123.4 MHz. The runway 20 approach is supported by an ILS.
The airport occupies the site of Cabatuan Airfield, a World War II airfield constructed in 1942 and operated by Japanese forces until their retreat in 1945; the airfield was the location of the official Japanese surrender on Panay on September 2, 1945. It was sometimes referred to, inaccurately, as Tiring Landing Field or Santa Barbara Airfield. Iloilo City's air services were previously handled by Mandurriao Airport, in operation from 1937, but by the 1990s that airport's cramped terminal, inadequate parking, and location alongside a major city highway had made it unworkable for the growing demands of a liberalised aviation market. The new airport at Cabatuan opened to commercial traffic on June 14, 2007, inheriting the ILO/RPVI codes and traffic ranking from its predecessor, and became the first airport in Western Visayas and on Panay built to international standards.
