Ormoc Airport is a small regional aerodrome serving Ormoc City on the island of Leyte in the Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines. It is a single-runway, non-precision field operated by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, of interest to the VFR pilot for its terrain-framed approach and modest, uncontrolled operating environment. The airport has been rebuilt in recent years following typhoon and earthquake damage, giving it a modern terminal alongside its original short-field character.

Overview

Ormoc Airport lies within Ormoc City on the island of Leyte, in the Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines, and is operated by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP). Classified as a Class 2 principal (minor domestic) airport, it is one of three airfields serving Leyte province alongside Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport at Tacloban and Hilongos Airport. For the simulator pilot it offers a compact, single-runway field set among the Visayan islands, with straightforward but unassisted approach procedures typical of a regional Philippine airport.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits at Ormoc City, Leyte Province, at coordinates 11.0565 N, 124.566 E, with a field elevation of 39 feet. It is notable as one of the few Philippine airports situated within a purpose-designated "airport village" barangay. No controlled airspace or terminal control details are published for the field, consistent with its status as a minor domestic airport; pilots should expect an uncontrolled, advisory-only environment typical of Class 2 fields in the Philippines.

Runways

Ormoc has a single physical runway aligned 18/36 with a hard surface. Published lengths differ by direction: runway 36 is listed at 6,682 feet and runway 18 at 4,047 feet. There is no instrument landing system at the field, so arrivals and departures are flown visually.

Radio & Navigation

The airport is served by a UNICOM frequency of 121.9 MHz, identified as "Ormoc Traffic" and providing an advisory service rather than full air traffic control. No navaids or instrument approach procedures are published for the field.

History

Ormoc Airport has long served the general Ormoc area and has at various times hosted several domestic airlines. The field suffered damage from Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in 2013 and from a magnitude 6.5 earthquake in July 2017. A rehabilitation project costing 34 million pesos, carried out by the Department of Transportation and the Department of Public Works and Highways, was completed in May 2018; this work expanded the airport's built area, renovated the passenger terminal, and added a CAAP administration building, while the runway itself was improved to accommodate larger aircraft. The new terminal building was inaugurated on 9 May 2019 by Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade and Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez.

The Airfield Today

Ormoc continues to operate as a Class 2 principal domestic airport under CAAP, with a renovated passenger terminal and administration building completed as part of the post-2017 rehabilitation programme. Runway improvements undertaken during that work were intended to allow the field to handle larger aircraft than previously. No specific operating hours, fuel availability, or simulator scenery packages are noted in available material.
