Lopez Island Airport (S31) is a small public-use aerodrome on the west side of Lopez Island in Washington's San Juan Islands, three miles south of the village of Lopez. Owned and operated by the Port of Lopez, it serves the local community with general aviation and air-taxi traffic, including scheduled seaplane and light-aircraft links to the mainland.
Lopez Island Airport is a small, community-owned airfield serving Lopez Island, one of the San Juan Islands off the Washington coast. It is owned and operated by the Port of Lopez and provides the island's principal fixed-wing access point, handling a mix of general aviation, flight training and scheduled air-taxi movements. For a simulator pilot, its short single runway, island setting and lack of any instrument approach make it a classic VFR destination amid the scenery of the San Juans.
The airport lies on the west side of Lopez Island, about three nautical miles south of the village of Lopez, within San Juan County, Washington. It sits among the San Juan Islands archipelago, with nearby general aviation fields at Friday Harbor and Orcas Island serving neighbouring islands. There is no indication of surrounding controlled airspace at the field.
The airport has a single physical runway, 16/34, of 2,894 feet with a hard (asphalt) surface, and it is lit.
No communications frequencies are published for Lopez Island Airport, and there is no ILS or other instrument approach. The Port of Lopez operates a weather observation array at the field, providing live AWOS-type weather data that can be viewed online.
The airfield sits on the west side of Lopez Island, close to the village of Lopez, with a golf course to the south of the field visible from the airport itself. Pilots inbound over the San Juan Islands can use the island's coastline and the village to help identify the field.
Lopez Island Airport has long been owned by the Port of Lopez, which manages it alongside other local public assets. It has historically supported scheduled air services to other San Juan Islands communities; San Juan Airlines once linked the field with Blakely Island, Bellingham and Friday Harbor, and Kenmore Air has operated a service connecting Lopez Airport with Boeing Field in Seattle, with a shuttle connection to Sea-Tac.
The airport remains a general aviation field with a small number of based aircraft, predominantly single-engine types, and supports a mix of private flying, air-taxi operations and occasional scheduled flights. The Port of Lopez maintains a 24-hour weather observation system at the field, accessible online, and provides webcam views of the runway and tie-down areas for pilots checking field conditions before flight.
