Gobernador Castello Airport (SAVV/VDM) serves the twin river cities of Viedma and Carmen de Patagones in Rio Negro Province, Argentina, sitting a few kilometres south of Viedma and about 25 kilometres inland from the Atlantic coast. It is a medium, government-operated field with two hard-surfaced runways and on-field VOR and NDB navaids, making it a useful VFR and IFR waypoint in Argentine Patagonia.

Overview

Gobernador Castello Airport is a public and military-use aerodrome serving the port city of Viedma and its sister town Carmen de Patagones on the opposite bank of the Rio Negro, in Rio Negro Province, Argentina. It is operated jointly by the Argentine government and Aeropuertos Argentina 2000, and its two paved runways plus on-field VOR and NDB navaids make it a straightforward and well-equipped destination for a simulator pilot exploring this stretch of Patagonian coastline.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies about 5 kilometres south of Viedma and roughly 25 kilometres inland from the Atlantic Ocean, on the Rio Negro Province side of the river that separates Viedma from Carmen de Patagones in Buenos Aires Province.

Runways

The field has two physical runways. Runway 11/29 is 8,353 feet long with a hard, lit surface, giving ample length for airliner and general aviation traffic alike. Runway 02/20 is the shorter cross runway at 4,786 feet, also hard-surfaced and lit. There is no ILS approach.

Radio & Navigation

The tower operates as Viedma Tower on 118.3 MHz. A VOR and a non-directional beacon, both identified VIE, are located on the airfield, providing useful navigation references for arrivals and departures in the area.

History

Gobernador Castello Airport takes its name from a former provincial governor and has long served as the aerial gateway to Viedma, the seat of Rio Negro Province, and its twin settlement Carmen de Patagones across the river. It combines public and military functions and is operated under the Aeropuertos Argentina 2000 network alongside state oversight.

The Airfield Today

The airport continues to handle scheduled airline service, with Aerolineas Argentinas operating flights to Buenos Aires-Aeroparque and San Carlos de Bariloche. Ground infrastructure includes a passenger terminal and car parking, supporting the field's role as the main air link for the Viedma and Carmen de Patagones area.
