Tancredo Neves International Airport, commonly known as Confins after the municipality in which it sits, is the main airport serving Belo Horizonte, the capital of the state of Minas Gerais. It is a large international field, home to Azul Brazilian Airlines and a focus city for Gol Transportes Aereos, and is operated by BH Airport S.A. For a visiting VFR or IFR simulator pilot it presents a good example of a modern Brazilian international airport, with radar-controlled approach, a long ILS-equipped runway and a mix of airline, cargo and general aviation traffic.
The airport lies in the municipality of Confins, Minas Gerais, some distance from downtown Belo Horizonte itself, and is served by its own approach control, Belo Horizonte APP, indicating that it sits within controlled airspace typical of a major international airport. Traffic is coordinated through Confins Clearance Delivery, Ground and Tower, with an overlying approach and operations service, reflecting an active and busy terminal area.
The airport has a single physical runway, 16/34, of hard surface construction and lit for night operations. The runway is equipped with ILS on both the 16 and 34 approaches, and the two directions are recorded with differing lengths of 9,840 feet and 8,689 feet respectively, most likely reflecting displaced thresholds or differing declared distances for each direction of use.
Pilots should expect to work Belo Horizonte APP on 120.2 MHz for approach control, with Belo Horizonte ATIS broadcasting on 127.45 MHz. On the ground, Confins Clearance Delivery operates on 121 MHz, Ground on 121.9 MHz, and Confins Tower on 118.2 MHz, with a separate Belo Horizonte Operations frequency available on 122.5 MHz. The runway is fitted with ILS, supporting instrument approaches to both 16 and 34.
The airport was built by Infraero and inaugurated in 1984, intended to relieve pressure on Belo Horizonte's original airport, Pampulha, which was by then operating well beyond its designed capacity. Growth was slow at first, hampered by the airport's distance from downtown Belo Horizonte and the cost of onward transport, and it took some 22 years to pass the one million passenger mark rather than the two million originally forecast by 1990. Since 2 September 1986 the airport has carried the name of Tancredo de Almeida Neves, the Brazilian president-elect who died in 1985. A turning point came in March 2005, when the Minas Gerais state government, with federal support, restricted Pampulha to aircraft of 50 seats or fewer, forcing around 130 flights to transfer to Confins and lifting its annual passenger flow from roughly 350,000 to about 3 million within the year. Subsequent infrastructure projects, including improvements to the MG-10 highway as part of the wider Linha Verde scheme, eased the airport's connection to the city. Investment ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup included apron expansion, additional taxiways and a runway extension, the latter eventually being completed to bring the runway to 3,600 metres. In November 2013 a concession to operate the airport from 2014 was awarded to the Aerobrasil consortium, known as BH Airport, comprising the Brazilian firm CCR and Swiss operator Flughafen Zurich AG; CCR was rebranded as Motiva in April 2025. Terminal operations were reorganised over the following years, with international services moving to a provisional Terminal 3 in September 2015 before transferring into the newly built Terminal 2 by January 2017, after which Terminal 3 was closed.
Tancredo Neves remains the primary international airport for Belo Horizonte, operated by BH Airport S.A. and serving as a hub for Azul Brazilian Airlines and a focus city for Gol Transportes Aereos. It is also home to Gol Airlines' main maintenance facilities and handles significant cargo traffic through dedicated freight facilities. The field continues to operate as a large, radar-controlled international airport with a full range of ATC and approach services.
