Campo Grande Airport (SBCG/CGR) serves as the main gateway to Mato Grosso do Sul in Brazil's Center-West, sitting close to the state capital and acting as a strategic waypoint for traffic heading toward Paraguay and Bolivia. For a visual pilot it offers a single long, hard-surfaced runway with an ILS approach, making it a straightforward and well-equipped stop in an otherwise sparsely served region.

Overview

Campo Grande Airport is the principal airport serving Campo Grande, the capital of Mato Grosso do Sul in Brazil's Center-West. It functions as an important regional and international gateway, with its position near the borders of Paraguay and Bolivia giving it a role as a stopover point for traffic moving through the southern part of the Center-West and into neighbouring Mercosur countries. Since October 2023 the terminal has been managed by Aena Brasil, part of the Spanish airport operator Aena.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies close to the city of Campo Grande, around seven kilometres from the city centre, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. Its geographic position, near the frontiers with Paraguay and Bolivia, makes it a natural staging point for flights moving between Brazil and its southern and western neighbours.

Runways

The airport has a single physical runway, 06/24, measuring 8,536 feet and surfaced in hard construction. Both ends are lit, and an ILS is provided on runway 06, giving instrument approach capability suited to the airport's role as a regional hub.

Radio & Navigation

Radio services are provided on APP 120.2 MHz, GND 121.9 MHz, OPS 122.5 MHz and TWR 118.1 MHz. The airport is equipped with an ILS serving runway 06.

History

The airfield's origins trace back to 1932, when the Brazilian Ministry of War (now the Ministry of Defense) established an Aviation Detachment Center at Campo Grande as a support base for aircraft transiting the region. A 600-metre landing strip was built to serve this base, and the following year the Army extended it to 1,400 metres. This improved infrastructure allowed the creation of the first Border Air Mail line in 1934. Alongside the civil airfield, the nearby Campo Grande Air Base, nicknamed the Pantanal Sentinel, was established in 1945. The airport predates the creation of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul itself in 1977, having developed as a strategic point for aircraft traffic in the Center-West of Brazil.

The Airfield Today

Campo Grande Airport now operates as an international airport and continues to serve as a strategic stopover for traffic moving through Mercosur, given the state's shared borders with Paraguay and Bolivia. Management of the terminal passed to Aena Brasil, part of the Spanish Aena group, on 13 October 2023, following the concessionaire's purchase of a block of Brazilian airports at a 2022 auction held by Brazil's National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac).
