Santa Genoveva Airport, also known as Goiânia International Airport, serves the city of Goiânia in Goiás state, Brazil, sitting at an elevation of 2448 feet some 8 km from the city centre. It is a substantial domestic hub with a single hard-surfaced runway long enough to handle airline jet traffic, making it a useful reference point for simulator pilots flying central Brazil.

Overview

Santa Genoveva Airport is the principal airport for Goiânia, capital of the state of Goiás, and has grown from a modest mid-twentieth-century field into a busy domestic gateway handling several million passengers a year on services to cities such as Brasília, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador. It is presently operated by Motiva, with control of the airport due to pass to the Mexican operator ASUR pending government approval. For a simulator pilot, it offers a long single runway with a genuine mix of airline and general aviation traffic in the interior of Brazil.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies about 8 km from downtown Goiânia in Goiás state, central Brazil. It handles scheduled airline operations and sits within controlled airspace served by its own tower and ground control.

Runways

Santa Genoveva has a single physical runway, 14/32, of hard surface construction and equipped with lighting. Runway 32 is 7807 feet long and runway 14 is 7484 feet long, the difference reflecting the differing declared distances in each direction; there is no ILS installed.

Radio & Navigation

Air traffic services are provided by Goiânia Tower, callsign GOIANIA TWR, on 118.7 MHz, with ground movements handled on 121.7 MHz and an ATIS broadcast available on 127.675 MHz. Instrument approaches at the field include a VOR approach to runway 32.

History

Santa Genoveva Airport was commissioned in 1955, although some operations began a few years before that formal date. Infraero took over operation of the airport in 1974. Rising demand through the 2000s and 2010s saw the original terminal, designed for 600,000 passengers a year, operating well beyond capacity, handling more than five times its rated throughput by 2015; a new passenger terminal on the opposite side of the airfield, across the runway, opened on 9 May 2016 with substantially greater capacity. Operation passed from Infraero to CCR under a 30-year concession awarded on 7 April 2021; CCR was rebranded Motiva on 26 April 2025, and on 18 November 2025 Motiva's entire airport portfolio, including Santa Genoveva, was sold to the Mexican operator ASUR, a transaction still awaiting government approval as of February 2026. The airport has seen two hijacking incidents, in 1975 and 1988, the latter diverted here from a flight bound for Brasília. On 14 January 2011 a Beechcraft B200 Super King Air conducting a VOR approach to runway 32 in heavy rain struck Santo Antônio Hill 11 km short of the runway, killing the pilot and five passengers.

The Airfield Today

Santa Genoveva functions today as a busy domestic airline hub, with Azul, Gol and LATAM Brasil operating services to destinations including Belo Horizonte, Campinas, Maceió, Palmas, Recife, Brasília, Cuiabá, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, and São Paulo's Congonhas and Guarulhos airports. The airport is operated by Motiva, with a change of ownership to ASUR pending.
