Dr. Leite Lopes State Airport opened on 2 April 1939, with its runway first extended in 1940. It was renamed in December 1956 in honour of the Brazilian scientist José Leite Lopes. A major renovation in 1996 extended the runway and adjoining taxiway from 1,800 m to 2,100 m and added a new, larger apron. The runway was further widened to 45 m in 2006, and the terminal building underwent renovation and enlargement, completed in July 2010. The airport was long operated by DAESP, the São Paulo state airport authority, until July 2021, when its concession was auctioned to the Rede Voa consortium, which has operated the field since.
Leite Lopes Airport is now operated by Rede Voa and continues to handle scheduled airline services alongside general aviation movements. It lies about 10 km from downtown Ribeirão Preto.
