Vitória-Eurico de Aguiar Salles Airport (SBVT) serves the city of Vitória in Espírito Santo, Brazil, and is a busy regional gateway with an ILS-equipped runway system suited to both airline and general aviation traffic. Located close to the coast a short distance from the city centre, it has operated on this site since the 1930s and today is run under a long-term concession by Zurich Airport Brasil.

Overview

Eurico de Aguiar Salles Airport, known by its IATA code VIX and ICAO code SBVT, is the airport serving Vitória, the capital of the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo. Formerly known as Goiabeiras Airport after the surrounding neighbourhood, it was renamed in 2006 in honour of Eurico de Aguiar Salles (1910-1959), a local politician, law professor and Minister of Justice. For a simulator pilot the field offers a mix of two hard-surfaced runways, an ILS approach and a tower/approach control environment typical of a mid-sized Brazilian international airport.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies close to the city of Vitória, about 10 km from the downtown area, on Brazil's south-eastern coast. It is a controlled aerodrome served by its own approach control and tower frequencies, reflecting its status as a regular airline destination for the region.

Runways

The airport has two physical runways. Runway 02/20 is 6,720 feet long with a hard surface and runway lighting. Runway 06/24 is approximately 5,722 to 5,723 feet long, also hard-surfaced and lit, with runway 24 equipped with an ILS approach. Field elevation is 16 feet above mean sea level.

Radio & Navigation

Pilots should expect to work Vitória Approach on 119.85 MHz and Vitória Tower on 118.1 MHz, with an ATIS broadcast available on 127.575 MHz. An ILS is provided for the approach to runway 24.

History

The airport was built in the 1930s, with a concrete runway and passenger terminal added in 1943. It was managed by the federal airport operator Infraero from 1975 until 2019, when a 30-year operating concession was awarded to Flughafen Zürich AG. A major renovation programme begun in 2005, which included a new passenger terminal built alongside a second runway and a new control tower, suffered repeated delays and cost overruns before being completed in April 2018. The airport was renamed after Eurico de Aguiar Salles by federal law in May 2006.

The Airfield Today

Since 2019 the airport has been operated by Zurich Airport Brasil under its long-term concession. It functions as a significant regional airport for Espírito Santo, handling scheduled airline services alongside general aviation movements, and its runway 24 approach is supported by an ILS.
