Andrés Sabella Gálvez International Airport (SCFA/ANF) is the gateway airfield for Antofagasta, a major port city in Chile's Atacama Desert copper-mining region. It offers a single long paved runway with full tower and approach control, making it a straightforward and prominent VFR/IFR waypoint on Chile's northern coast. Formerly known as Cerro Moreno International Airport, it now handles scheduled domestic airline traffic as well as general aviation movements.

Overview

Andrés Sabella Gálvez International Airport, known by its ICAO code SCFA and IATA code ANF, serves the city of Antofagasta in northern Chile's Antofagasta Region. It is operated as a concession by Sociedad Concesionaria Aeropuerto de Antofagasta S.A. and functions as the principal air gateway to the copper-mining heartland of the Atacama Desert. For a simulator pilot the field is notable for its single very long hard-surfaced runway set in stark desert terrain close to the Pacific coast, together with full tower and approach control services.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies around 10 kilometres north of the city of Antofagasta and about 3 kilometres inland from the Pacific coastline, in the Antofagasta Region of northern Chile. Traffic in the vicinity is worked by Antofagasta Approach and Antofagasta Tower, indicating that the airfield sits within controlled airspace appropriate to a major regional international airport.

Runways

The airfield has a single physical runway, 01/19, oriented almost north-south. It is 8,568 feet long, has a hard surface, and is lit. There is no ILS installed.

Radio & Navigation

Pilots should expect to work Antofagasta Approach (Antofagasta APP) on 119.3 MHz for arrival and departure sequencing, Antofagasta Tower (Antofagasta TWR) on 118.1 MHz for runway and circuit control, Ground on 121.9 MHz for surface movement, and Antofagasta Radio (Antofagasta RDO) on 127.1 MHz. No ILS approach is available at the field.

History

The airport was previously known as Cerro Moreno International Airport before being renamed Andrés Sabella Gálvez International Airport. Its origins as an airfield date to the mid-twentieth century, when it was established to meet growing air travel demand in the Antofagasta Region. The airport sits a short distance inland from the Pacific coast, north of the city it serves, reflecting its role as the region's principal air link since that period.

The Airfield Today

Today the airport functions as a major international and domestic hub for the Antofagasta Region, with scheduled services operated by carriers including LATAM Chile, Sky Airline and JetSmart Chile, connecting the city to destinations such as Santiago, Concepción, La Serena and Lima. It is equipped with modern passenger-handling facilities as well as cargo and freight infrastructure supporting the surrounding mining industry.
