Carriel Sur International Airport (SCIE/CCP) serves Concepción in Chile's Biobío Region, sited in the neighbouring commune of Talcahuano some 8 km from the city centre. It is the principal air gateway for the Biobío Region, offering a single long, lit hard-surface runway with an ILS approach, making it a straightforward and well-equipped destination for VFR and IFR flights alike.

Overview

Carriel Sur International Airport lies in Talcahuano, part of Greater Concepción, and is the largest and most important airport serving the Biobío Region of Chile. It handles domestic scheduled traffic for carriers such as LATAM Airlines and JetSmart, and for the visiting simulator pilot it offers a substantial single runway with instrument approach capability set against the coastal and estuarine landscape around Concepción.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits in the commune of Talcahuano, about 8 km from downtown Concepción, in the Biobío Region of Chile. It is a controlled aerodrome with its own approach and tower services (see Radio & Navigation), reflecting its status as the main airport for the Concepción metropolitan area.

Runways

Carriel Sur has a single physical runway, 02/20, an asphalt or concrete (hard) surface some 8,523 to 8,524 feet in length, lit for night operations. Runway 02 is equipped with an ILS, giving a precision approach into the field from the south-westerly direction; runway 20 offers the reciprocal landing direction. Field elevation is 20 feet.

Radio & Navigation

Pilots should expect to work Concepcion APP on 129.35 MHz for approach and departure, Concepcion TWR on 118.6 MHz for the runway and circuit, and ground movements on 121.9 MHz. The ILS serving runway 02 provides a instrument approach for arrivals from the south-west.

History

Carriel Sur is described as the largest and most important airport in the Biobío Region, located in Talcahuano within Greater Concepción, roughly 8 km from the city centre.

The Airfield Today

Carriel Sur continues to operate as the main airport for Concepción and the Biobío Region, handling domestic services for LATAM Airlines and JetSmart. The airport has invested in environmental infrastructure, including installing the region's first electric vehicle charging point and gaining certification for the use of renewable energy in its operations.
