Mocopulli Airport is a regional public airport on Chiloé Island in Chile's Los Lagos Region, serving the towns of Dalcahue and Castro. It offers a single long hard-surfaced runway with an ILS approach, making it a straightforward destination for scheduled airline traffic as well as visiting VFR pilots.

Overview

Mocopulli Airport (ICAO: SCPQ, IATA: MHC) is a public airport built to serve Dalcahue, a port city on Chiloé Island, and the nearby city of Castro. It is the principal air link for this part of the Los Lagos Region, handling scheduled jet services from Santiago, and its single instrument-equipped runway makes it a useful and interesting stop for a simulator pilot exploring southern Chile.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies on Chiloé Island in the Los Lagos Region of Chile, about 6 kilometres northwest of Dalcahue and within reach of the larger city of Castro. The Mocopulli VOR-DME, identifier MPI, is located on the airfield itself, providing a navigation reference for the surrounding area.

Runways

Mocopulli has a single physical runway, 17/35, of 6,568 feet with a hard surface. The runway is equipped with an ILS serving runway 35, giving instrument approach capability into the field.

Radio & Navigation

Ground movements are handled on 121.6 MHz and the tower frequency is 118.4 MHz. The on-field Mocopulli VOR-DME (ident MPI) supports navigation to and from the airport, and an ILS is available for runway 35.

History

Mocopulli Airport was developed as the airport for Dalcahue and Castro on Chiloé Island, replacing older, more limited airstrips serving the island. It has since become the point of entry for scheduled airline services connecting Chiloé with Santiago, operated by LATAM Chile and Sky Airline.

The Airfield Today

The airport continues to handle scheduled jet services, with LATAM Chile and Sky Airline both operating flights to Santiago de Chile. As a public airport with a long paved runway and ILS approach, it is capable of accommodating a range of aircraft types beyond its regional airline traffic.
