La Florida Airport (SCSE/LSC) serves the coastal city of La Serena in Chile's Coquimbo Region, offering a single main paved runway alongside a shorter grass strip. It is a scheduled domestic gateway used by JetSmart, LATAM Chile and Sky Airline, and it holds a place in Chilean aviation history as the starting point for the first flight to Easter Island.
La Florida Airport is a government-operated public airport serving La Serena and the neighbouring port city of Coquimbo, on Chile's Pacific coast in the Coquimbo Region. It combines scheduled domestic airline operations with general aviation activity, and its long asphalt runway alongside a shorter grass strip makes it a straightforward but operationally interesting field for a visiting VFR pilot, with the added draw of its historical link to the pioneering flight to Easter Island.
The airport lies at La Serena-Coquimbo on Chile's northern Pacific coast, at coordinates 29.9164 S, 71.1994 W. Air traffic is worked by La Serena Tower on frequency 118.6 MHz, with ground movements on 121.9 MHz and a radio position on 127.3 MHz; approach control in the wider area is provided by Santiago Approach on 128.1 MHz.
La Florida has two physical runways. The main runway, 12/30, is 6,349 feet long with a hard surface and is lit. A second, shorter runway, 12R/30L, is 4,453 feet long with a grass surface and is unlit. Field elevation is 456 feet.
Radio services at La Florida are provided under the callsign La Serena Tower on 118.6 MHz, with ground frequency 121.9 MHz and a radio frequency of 127.3 MHz. Wider area approach control is handled by Santiago Approach on 128.1 MHz. No ILS is available at the field.
On 19 January 1951, Captain Roberto Parragué Singer flew his aircraft "Manu-Tara" from La Florida Airport to Hanga Roa on Easter Island, landing the following day and completing the first flight ever made to the island, a landmark event in Chilean aviation history. The airport was also the scene of a serious accident on 9 December 1982, when Aeronor Flight 304 crashed short of the runway, killing all 46 people on board.
La Florida continues to operate as a scheduled domestic airport, with JetSmart Chile, LATAM Chile and Sky Airline flying services to destinations including Antofagasta, Calama, Iquique, Arica and Santiago de Chile. The main hard runway is lit for night operations, while the parallel grass strip remains available as a secondary landing surface.
