For a simulator pilot, its appeal lies in its jungle-edge setting, its long single runway suited to a range of aircraft types, and its role as a domestic link between the remote Oriente region and Quito.
The airport lies within the urban area of Puerto Francisco de Orellana, running parallel to the Coca River, in Orellana Province in eastern Ecuador. It is a medium-sized airport handling scheduled domestic airline service, situated in a remote lowland rainforest setting away from major controlled airspace hubs.
The airfield has one physical runway, 16/34, measuring 7,573 feet and surfaced in hard asphalt. Runway 16 is equipped with an ILS approach, giving instrument-capable arrivals a precision option into this remote strip; runway 34 is served visually.
Overhead traffic and arrivals are worked by Quito Approach on 119.7 MHz, with a secondary approach/radio frequency at 126.9 MHz. Local tower service is provided by Coca Tower on 123.5 MHz. An ILS is available for runway 16.
The airport sits within the town of Coca itself, immediately alongside the Coca River, which provides a clear and prominent visual feature for locating and aligning with the field from the air.
Coca's airport traces its scheduled passenger service to a new facility that opened on 16 November 2018, replacing earlier arrangements for air access to Orellana Province. Since opening it has handled domestic flights connecting Coca with Quito, supporting the town's role as capital of the province and as a hub for the surrounding Amazon region.
Francisco de Orellana Airport continues to operate scheduled domestic services to and from Quito, flown by carriers including Aeroregional and LATAM Ecuador. It functions as the principal air link for Puerto Francisco de Orellana and the wider Orellana Province, situated on the banks of the Coca River within the town.
