Silvio Pettirossi International Airport (SGAS/ASU) is Paraguay's principal gateway, situated at Luque on the northeastern edge of Asunción. It is a joint civil-military field, sharing infrastructure with the Ñu-Guazú Air Force Base, and serves as the main hub for LATAM Paraguay and Paranair. For a visiting VFR or IFR pilot it offers a single long hard-surfaced runway with an ILS, full ATC services, and a history stretching back to the late 1930s.

Overview

Silvio Pettirossi International Airport lies at Luque, just outside Asunción, and is Paraguay's busiest and most important airport. It is named after the pioneering Paraguayan aviator Silvio Pettirossi (1887-1916) and functions as a dual-use aerodrome, with parts of the airfield shared with the Paraguayan Air Force's Ñu-Guazú Air Force Base. It is the principal hub for LATAM Paraguay and Paranair, making it a natural focus for any simulated flight around the Paraguayan capital.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits in Luque, on the northeastern fringes of the Asunción metropolitan area, and is the primary controlled aerodrome serving the capital. Traffic is worked by Asuncion Control on approach and en route around the field, with a dedicated tower and ground frequency for movements on the airport surface. Given its status as Paraguay's principal international airport and its shared use with a Paraguayan Air Force base, pilots should expect active controlled airspace and mixed civil/military traffic in the vicinity.

Runways

The airfield has a single physical runway, 02/20, orientated northeast-southwest. It is a hard-surfaced runway 11,032 feet in length, lit for night operations, with an instrument landing system serving runway 20.

Radio & Navigation

Asuncion Tower operates on 118.1 MHz, with ground movements handled on 121.9 MHz. Approach control is provided on 119.7 MHz, and Asuncion Control (area/centre) works on 128.4 MHz. Radio (company/information) frequencies are published as 126.9 MHz and 1002.4 MHz, both listed as Asuncion Rdo. An ILS is available for runway 20, supporting instrument approaches in addition to visual arrivals.

History

The airport was inaugurated on 11 June 1938 and takes its name from Silvio Pettirossi, a Paraguayan aviator who died in 1916. Between 1980 and 1989 it was officially known as President Stroessner International Airport, after the then head of state Alfredo Stroessner. Its runway was constructed in the 1960s and resurfaced in 1985, with further repair work begun in 2001 and completed in the mid-2000s after funding delays. A new instrument landing system was installed in November 2009, replacing equipment dating from 1980 and bringing the airport up to contemporary international standards. The current passenger terminal has been in service since 20 March 1980; the original terminal building, near the threshold of runway 02, is now used by the Grupo Aerotáctico (GAT) of the Paraguayan Air Force, reflecting the airfield's continuing joint civil-military role.

The Airfield Today

Silvio Pettirossi remains Paraguay's principal international airport and the main hub for LATAM Paraguay and Paranair, handling a mix of scheduled international and domestic passenger services as well as cargo operations. Some airport facilities continue to be shared with the Paraguayan Air Force's Ñu-Guazú Air Force Base, underlining the field's dual civil-military character.
