Antonio Nariño Airport is a public airport operated by Aerocivil, located in the town of Chachagüí and serving the city of Pasto in Colombia's Nariño Department. It handles domestic flights, military operations and private charters, and has at times been classified as an international airport with services to Esmeraldas, Ecuador, though that route ceased when its operating airline stopped flying in 2010. For a simulator pilot, the field's distinctive table-top runway, high elevation and exposure to crosswinds make it a genuinely challenging and interesting destination.
The airport lies at Chachagüí, about 35 kilometres north of Pasto, the city it primarily serves, within the Nariño Department of Colombia.
The airport has a single physical runway, 02/20, surfaced in hard material and 7,165 feet long, with lighting on both directions. Runway 20 is equipped with an ILS. The runway is built on a plateau roughly 50 metres above the surrounding terrain, giving it a table-top character that many pilots liken to an aircraft carrier deck, and it is relatively short given the airport's high elevation.
Pilots can expect to work Pasto Radio on 348.8 MHz and the tower on 118 MHz. An instrument landing system has served runway 20 since 2007, permitting operations at night and in low visibility.
The airport takes its name from Antonio Nariño and has long served as the gateway for Pasto, some 35 kilometres to the south. The field has at various points been classified as an international airport, once serving flights to Esmeraldas in Ecuador, though this service ended in 2010 when the operating airline ceased operations. A new terminal, administrative building and control tower were constructed, along with updated navigation equipment, in response to growing passenger and cargo traffic.
The airport continues to handle domestic flights, alongside military operations and private charters, with aircraft ranging from Airbus A318/A319/A320 and Boeing 737/727 types down to turboprops and smaller general aviation types.
