Gustavo Rojas Pinilla International Airport (SKSP/ADZ) is the principal gateway to the Colombian archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina in the Caribbean. It offers a single long asphalt runway capable of handling large jet traffic, making it an interesting fixed-wing destination for simulator pilots flying into this remote island setting.

Overview

Gustavo Rojas Pinilla International Airport serves San Andrés, the main island of the Colombian archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina, situated in the western Caribbean Sea. Operated by Aerocivil, the Colombian civil aviation authority, it is the principal air link between the islands and mainland Colombia, and its single long runway is capable of accepting aircraft as large as the Airbus A340-200, giving it an unusual scale for such a small island destination and making it a rewarding target for simulator pilots.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies on the island of San Andrés, within the Colombian department of Archipiélago de San Andrés, Providencia y Santa Catalina, close to the island's commercial and banking centre. As an international airport handling scheduled jet traffic, it sits within controlled airspace served by San Andrés Approach and Tower, with overlying en-route control provided by Panama Center given the airport's position out in the western Caribbean, well offshore from the Colombian mainland.

Runways

The airport has a single physical runway, 06/24, aligned north-east to south-west. It is 7786 feet long, has a hard (asphalt) surface, and is lit for night operations. There is no ILS installed.

Radio & Navigation

San Andrés Approach is available on 119.3 MHz, with an ATIS broadcast on 113.3 MHz. San Andrés Tower operates on 118.1 MHz. Overlying area control is provided by Panama Center on 120.3 MHz, and a radio facility, San Andrés RDO, operates on 653.2 MHz.

History

The airport was built in the mid-1950s on the orders of General Gustavo Rojas Pinilla, who was president of Colombia at the time, specifically to link the island of San Andrés with the Colombian mainland. It was originally known as Sesquicentenario Airport before being renamed in honour of Rojas Pinilla. Over the decades it has grown into the main air terminal for the archipelago, though most of its passenger traffic originates from continental Colombia rather than direct international services.

The Airfield Today

Gustavo Rojas Pinilla remains the sixth busiest airport in Colombia by passenger numbers and continues to handle a substantial mix of domestic and seasonal international traffic. Scheduled operators include Avianca, Copa Airlines, JetSmart Colombia, LATAM Colombia, SATENA, WestJet and Wingo, connecting San Andrés with cities such as Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Cartagena, Barranquilla and Panama City, along with seasonal Canadian services. The runway's length allows it to accept wide-body aircraft up to the size of an Airbus A340-200, reflecting its role as the key air gateway to the archipelago.
