The airport lies about 4 kilometres north of Yacuíba, in a valley running north-south, with rising terrain to the east and the Cordillera Central mountains some 2.5 kilometres to the west. It sits near the international border with Argentina, in the Tarija Department of southern Bolivia.
Yacuiba has a single hard-surfaced, lit runway aligned 03/21. The 03 threshold is declared with 6,876 ft available, while the 21 threshold is declared with 4,722 ft available, reflecting differing declared distances between the two directions rather than two separate strips.
The tower callsign operates on 118.3 MHz, with a radio frequency also listed at 662.2 MHz. The Yacuiba non-directional beacon (ident YAC) is located on the airfield, providing a navigation aid for arriving traffic; there is no ILS.
The airfield lies within a distinctive north-south valley, bounded by rising ground to the east and the Cordillera Central ridge line about 2.5 kilometres to the west, both useful references when inbound from either direction along the valley.
The airport has seen several notable incidents over the decades. On 4 February 1964 a Lloyd Aéreo Boliviano Douglas C-47 Skytrain crashed shortly after takeoff, killing two people. On 20 October 1973 a hijacked Aerolíneas Argentinas Boeing 737 landed at Yacuiba, where 38 passengers were released. On 2 June 1980 a Lloyd Aéreo Boliviano Fairchild F-27 crashed on approach, killing all 13 aboard. On 17 January 2003 a British Aerospace Jetstream operated by Servicio Aéreo Vargas España crashed into trees shortly after takeoff attempt, with no fatalities.
Boliviana de Aviación has operated services linking Yacuiba with Tarija. The airfield remains a modest domestic facility supporting regional air links in southern Bolivia.
