It combines civil passenger operations with a military presence, hosting Air Base 367 'Capitaine François Massé', described as the only NATO outpost in South America, and it also handles large aircraft used to move satellites for the Guiana Space Centre, giving it an unusually varied traffic mix for a field of its size. Its single long, lit runway with an ILS approach makes it a straightforward and rewarding destination for simulator pilots flying long-haul or regional South American routes.
The airport sits at Matoury in French Guiana, at an elevation of 20 feet, with reference coordinates of 4.8197N, 52.3619W.
The airfield has a single physical runway, 08/26, 10,473 feet long with a hard surface. Both directions are lit, and runway 08 is equipped with an ILS approach.
Approach is available on 119.9 MHz, with an ATIS broadcast on 132.2 MHz and Tower on 118.1 MHz. An ILS is provided for runway 08.
The airfield's most distinctive historical feature is its dual civil-military character: it hosts Air Base 367 'Capitaine François Massé', noted as the only NATO outpost in South America. Its location and infrastructure have also long tied it into the logistics chain for the nearby Guiana Space Centre, with the airport handling the large aircraft used to move satellites destined for launch.
From 1 October 2025 the airport has been operated under a new 30-year concession led by Egis, alongside Alyse Guyane, Caisse des Dépôts, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Guyane region, and the construction firm Léon Grosse. The concession includes an 85 million euro investment programme aimed at modernising infrastructure and reorganising passenger flows, security, border control and boarding areas within the existing terminal footprint, carried out in two phases with the first due for completion in 2029. The airport currently handles nearly 500,000 passengers a year and is the main gateway to French Guiana, also providing essential links to secondary airfields including Maripasoula, Saint-Laurent du Maroni, Saül, Saint-Georges-de-l'Oyapock and Kaw. It has been awarded Level 2 Airport Carbon Accreditation, and the new operators are working toward ISO 14001 and 50001 certification along with ACA3 Level 4+ accreditation by 2030.
