Andahuaylas Airport (SPHY/ANS) is a high-elevation airfield serving the city of Andahuaylas in Peru's Apurímac Region, notable as the only field in the department capable of handling commercial traffic. Sitting on a mesa above the Chumbao River with high terrain in every quadrant, it presents a demanding approach and departure environment for visiting pilots. Andahuaylas Airport is a high-elevation aerodrome serving the city of Andahuaylas in the Apurímac Region of Peru. Operated by the civil government through CORPAC S.A., it is the only airport in the department capable of receiving commercial flights, and it also handles a significant number of charter movements. For a simulator pilot, its combination of high field elevation, a single long hard-surfaced runway with an ILS, and steep surrounding terrain makes it an engaging and challenging Andean destination.
The airport lies about 6 kilometres southeast of the town of Andahuaylas, perched on a mesa above the Chumbao River, which flows north and west back into the town itself. High terrain surrounds the field in all quadrants, a factor that shapes both instrument and visual approach planning in the area.
Andahuaylas has a single physical runway, 03/21, 8,163 feet long with a hard surface and runway lighting. An ILS serves runway 21, providing instrument guidance for approaches from that direction.
The field uses an RDO (radio) frequency of 126.9 MHz. Runway 21 is served by an ILS, offering the primary instrument approach aid at the airport.
The mesa on which the airport sits, rising above the Chumbao River, is the principal visual feature for locating the field, with the river valley leading northwest back toward the town of Andahuaylas. Pilots should also be alert to the high ground surrounding the airport on all sides when planning a visual join.
Andahuaylas Airport has long served as the sole air link for the Apurímac Region capable of commercial operations, operated by the Peruvian civil aviation authority CORPAC S.A. Alongside scheduled services, the airport has historically handled numerous charter flights. ATSA Airlines has announced plans to begin service to Lima from the airport starting 31 March 2026.
Andahuaylas continues to function as the principal airport for the Apurímac Region, operated by CORPAC S.A., with scheduled service to Lima planned via ATSA Airlines and a history of charter operations alongside regular flights.
