Coronel FAP Carlos Ciriani Santa Rosa International Airport (SPTN/TCQ) serves Tacna in southern Peru, close to the Chilean border, and is the principal gateway to the Tacna Region. SPTN is the main airport for the city of Tacna in far southern Peru, operated by the state airport authority CORPAC S.A. It sits close to Peru's border with Chile and handles domestic airline services, giving a sim pilot a realistic mix of scheduled traffic and a single long runway equipped for instrument approaches in a high desert setting.
The airport lies at Tacna, in the Tacna Region of southern Peru, about 27 km (17 mi) north of the border with Chile. Coordinates place the field at 18.0533 S, 70.2758 W, at an elevation of 1453 ft.
The airport has one physical runway, 02/20, oriented roughly north-south. It is 8170 ft long with a hard surface and is lit for night operations. Runway 02 is equipped with an ILS.
Radio services are provided under the callsign Tacna. Tacna RDO operates on 126.9 MHz, while Tacna APP/TWR (combined approach and tower) operates on 118.4 MHz. Runway 02 has an ILS approach available for instrument arrivals.
The airport is run by CORPAC S.A. (Corporación Peruana de Aeropuertos y Aviación Comercial S.A.), the Peruvian government body responsible for airport management, and is the main airport serving the Tacna Region. On 19 March 2000 an Aviandina Boeing 727-100 on a scheduled flight from Arequipa to Juliaca suffered a landing gear failure and diverted to Tacna, holding for over an hour to burn off fuel before landing with its right main gear retracted; the aircraft sustained substantial damage but there were no injuries, and it was later scrapped.
Tacna airport continues to handle scheduled domestic services, with LATAM Peru and Sky Airline both operating flights to Lima. The field remains under CORPAC S.A. management as the principal airport for the Tacna Region.
