Padre Aldamiz International Airport, also known as Puerto Maldonado International Airport, is a small but capable airport serving the jungle city of Puerto Maldonado in the Madre de Dios Region of Peru. It is operated by CORPAC S.A. and handles a modest amount of scheduled traffic connecting the city with Lima and Cusco, largely in support of ecological tourism to the nearby Tambopata-Candamo national reserve. For a simulator pilot, the field is notable for its long single runway set deep in the Amazon basin, and for the sense of arriving at a genuine frontier airport rather than a major hub.
The airport lies at Puerto Maldonado in the Madre de Dios Region of Peru, in the country's south-eastern Amazon lowlands. It sits near ecologically significant rainforest areas, including the Tambopata-Candamo national jungle reserve.
The airport has a single physical runway, 01/19, measuring 11,518 feet in length with a hard surface. Both directions are lit, and runway 01 is equipped with an ILS approach.
Puerto Maldonado Approach operates on 118.8 MHz, with a secondary approach/radio frequency on 126.9 MHz. Puerto Maldonado Tower also operates on 118.8 MHz. An ILS is available for runway 01.
The airport was historically served by Peru's national carrier AeroPerú until that airline ceased operations in 1999. Following AeroPerú's collapse, other carriers took up the Lima to Puerto Maldonado route; Nuevo Continente attempted to serve the airport from 2004 but suspended operations amid allegations of drug trafficking involving its owners. LAN Perú and TACA Perú also served the field, with LAN's successor LATAM Peru continuing operations today. The Peruvian Air Force previously used Boeing 707 aircraft for cargo flights into the airport.
The airport is served by LATAM Perú, which operates Airbus A320 family jets to Cusco and Lima, and by Sky Airline Peru, which flies to Cusco. Star Peru has also operated routes to the field. Travellers are advised that airport authorities require documentation of yellow fever vaccination given the airport's rainforest location.
