Marie-Galante Airport (TFFM/GBJ) is a small public airfield on the island of Marie-Galante, serving Grand-Bourg and the wider commune network in Guadeloupe. It sits a short hop east of Pointe-à-Pitre and has historically supported inter-island air links within the French Antilles, making it a useful and characterful VFR destination for pilots exploring the Guadeloupe archipelago.

Overview

Marie-Galante Airport lies on the island of Marie-Galante, one of the dependencies of Guadeloupe in the French Antilles. It is operated by the Conseil Général de la Guadeloupe and has traditionally handled short inter-island flights connecting the island with Pointe-à-Pitre on the Guadeloupe mainland. For a simulator pilot, it offers a compact, low-traffic island field with a single hard runway, set against the backdrop of the Caribbean Sea, and makes an interesting short-hop destination from the busier airspace around Pointe-à-Pitre.

Airspace & Location

The airfield is located about 5.5 kilometres (3.0 nautical miles) east of Grand-Bourg, one of the three communes on Marie-Galante island, itself part of the Guadeloupe island group in the eastern Caribbean. Approach control for the area is provided by Raizet Approach, reflecting the field's position within the wider airspace served from Pointe-à-Pitre.

Runways

The airfield has a single physical runway, 09/27, with a hard surface and runway lighting. The published length is 3692 feet when used as runway 09 and 3313 feet when used as runway 27. There is no ILS approach available. Field elevation is 13 feet above mean sea level.

Radio & Navigation

An AFIS (Aerodrome Flight Information Service) is provided on 119.3 MHz. Approach services for the area are available from Raizet Approach on 121.3 MHz. A non-directional beacon identified MG is sited on the airfield, providing a basic navigation aid for arrivals.

History

The airfield has served as the air link for Marie-Galante within the Guadeloupe archipelago, with the Marie Galante non-directional beacon, identified MG, established on the field to assist navigation. Air Inter Iles has operated flights between Marie-Galante and Pointe-à-Pitre, maintaining the island's connection to the main Guadeloupe airport.
