Ganja International Airport lies on the western edge of Ganja, Azerbaijan's third-largest city, and has served as a hub for both military and civil aviation since the Soviet era. It offers a substantial main runway equipped with ILS, making it accessible in a range of weather conditions, and its history includes a notable role during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war.

Overview

Ganja International Airport serves Ganja, the third-largest city in Azerbaijan, and is operated for both civil and military purposes. It is currently served by Azerbaijan Airlines along with a handful of international carriers, and its long ILS-equipped runway and history as a former Soviet Air Force base make it an interesting stop for the simulator pilot exploring Caucasus aviation.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits in Goygol Rayon on the outskirts of Ganja in western Azerbaijan. It functions as an international airport, handling both scheduled airline traffic and, historically, military operations.

Runways

The airfield has two physical runways. The main runway, 12/30, is 10,798 feet long with a hard surface, lit, and equipped with an ILS. The secondary runway, 12R/30L, is 8,102 feet long, also hard-surfaced and lit, but has no instrument approach.

Radio & Navigation

Approach control operates on 124 MHz, with an ATIS broadcast on 119.25 MHz and tower on 124 MHz. The main runway, 12/30, is equipped with an ILS for instrument approaches.

History

The airport opened in 1951 and was previously used by the Soviet Air Force. In 1996 it was granted international airport status and has since supported civil aviation alongside its continuing military role. During the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war the airport featured prominently in the conflict: it was reported closed to civil traffic due to the COVID-19 pandemic at the time, and satellite imagery later confirmed the presence of Turkish Air Force F-16 fighters at the field, a fact eventually acknowledged by the Azerbaijani president, who stated they had arrived during earlier military exercises rather than for combat operations.

The Airfield Today

The airport remains in use for scheduled civil flights, with Azerbaijan Airlines and other carriers operating services to destinations including Moscow, Istanbul, and Nakhchivan. The secondary concrete runway, 12R/30L, has long been non-operational owing to a lack of maintenance and navigation equipment, though occasional military use of the airfield has meant renovation of this runway has been considered.
