Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Airport, also known as Khomutovo, is the principal airport of Sakhalin Oblast, serving the regional capital of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk on Sakhalin Island in Russia's Far East. The field has a single physical runway, 01/19, measuring 11,125 feet with a hard surface. It is lit and equipped with an ILS, with the instrument approach available for both the 01 and 19 directions. Field elevation is 46 feet.
Radio services are provided under the callsigns GCA on 120.6 MHz and RDR TWR also on 120.6 MHz.
The airport was established in 1945 as a military airfield and has since grown into the main airport of Sakhalin Oblast. It continues to serve as the headquarters of the 39th Separate Guards Motor Rifle Brigade, reflecting its military origins. A new passenger terminal, more than 47,000 square metres in size and around five times larger than the old one, opened on 7 August 2023, featuring six jet bridges, eleven boarding gates and a five-level automated baggage handling system.
The airport is the largest in Sakhalin Oblast, with one passenger terminal, two cargo terminals and sixteen aircraft stands, and a new terminal designed to handle up to five million passengers annually. It serves as a hub for Aurora, which flies to destinations including Vladivostok, Khabarovsk, Krasnoyarsk, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and international points such as Beijing–Daxing, Harbin and Shanghai–Pudong, alongside services from Aeroflot, IrAero, Rossiya Airlines and S7 Airlines. Construction of a new 3,400-metre runway is under way and is expected to be completed by September 2026, which sim pilots planning future scenarios should note as it will supplement the existing 01/19 runway.
