It is operated by AeroBratsk, its principal civilian tenant, and today functions as a domestic airline hub and a staging point for cargo flights, while its Soviet-era origins as an air defence interceptor base give it a distinctive history for anyone studying the field before a visit.
The airport lies about 8 kilometres north of the city of Bratsk in Irkutsk Oblast, in the Siberian interior of the Russian Federation. It is used as a designated diversion airport on Polar Route 2, reflecting its position along high-latitude transpolar air routes.
The field has a single physical runway, 12/30, of hard surface construction and approximately 10,290 feet in length. Both directions are lit, and an ILS is provided for approaches to runway 30.
Ground movements are handled on 121.8 MHz (GND). Transit and miscellaneous communications use 131.8 MHz (MISC). Meteorological information is broadcast on 127.2 MHz (PMSV). The tower operates as KRUG on 118.1 MHz (TWR). An ILS serves runway 30 for instrument approaches.
The airfield's military role began in 1984 with the 350th Interceptor Aviation Regiment (350 IAP), which operated Tupolev Tu-128 'Fiddler' interceptors tasked with air defence of a vast swathe of the Siberian interior, exploiting the type's long range to cover the region. By the 1990s the regiment had re-equipped with MiG-31 jets. The 350 IAP was disbanded in 2002, after which a small search and rescue detachment of An-26 transports and Mi-8 helicopters, under the command of the 32nd Independent Composite Aviation Regiment based at Yekaterinburg, took up residence; this unit had previously been known as 11 APSO. Most of the military barrack blocks and ancillary buildings have since been demolished, though the large hangar dating from the 1980s still stands as a reminder of the base's Cold War role.
Bratsk Airport is operated by AeroBratsk and provides 32 parking spaces for medium-sized airliners, continuing to serve a vital civil aviation role as a staging base for cargo flights to Kamchatka. It handles more than 100,000 passengers annually and ranks as the second-largest airport in the Irkutsk region. Scheduled services are operated by S7 Airlines, linking Bratsk with Irkutsk, Moscow-Domodedovo and Novosibirsk, and by Utair to Irkutsk.
