Ihor Sikorsky Kyiv International Airport, better known as Zhuliany, lies within the city limits of Kyiv, only a few kilometres from the centre, making it one of the most conveniently placed airports in Ukraine. Named after aviation pioneer Igor Sikorsky, it is one of the country's oldest airfields and, before 2022, was a busy mix of low-cost scheduled services and business aviation. For the simulator pilot it offers a compact, city-centre airport experience with a single long instrument runway and full radar and tower services.

Overview

Zhuliany sits inside the Kyiv city boundary, roughly eight kilometres from the centre, and is one of Ukraine's oldest airports. It carries the name of Igor (Ihor) Sikorsky, the pioneering helicopter and aircraft designer born in Kyiv. Before 2022 the field combined scheduled low-cost carrier traffic with a significant business aviation presence, a role its central location made especially attractive. For a simulator pilot it presents an interesting short-hop destination into a busy, radar-controlled city airport rather than a large international hub.

Airspace & Location

Zhuliany lies within the Kyiv Flight Information Region, identified as UKBV. The airport sits inside controlled airspace close to the city centre, with approach control provided by Kyiv Radar.

Runways

The airport has a single physical runway, 08/26, a hard-surfaced, lit runway equipped with ILS. Runway 26 is 7,582 feet long and runway 08 is 7,087 feet long.

Radio & Navigation

Kyiv Radar provides approach control on 125.3 MHz. Zhuliany Tower operates on 120.7 MHz, with ground movements handled on 119 MHz. An English-language ATIS broadcast is available on 127.475 MHz, alongside a Russian-language meteorological ATIS on 126.8 MHz. The runway is equipped with an ILS to support instrument approaches.

History

Zhuliany is one of Ukraine's oldest airports and takes its full name from Igor Sikorsky, the Kyiv-born pioneer of fixed-wing and helicopter design. In the years before 2022 it functioned as a major low-cost carrier base as well as a hub for business aviation, its position within the city making it far more convenient for many travellers than the larger international airport outside town.

The Airfield Today

Scenery for Zhuliany is available for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020/2024, Prepar3D v4 and later, and X-Plane 11 and later, making it a viable and well-supported destination for home simulator flights.
