Krasnoyarsk International Airport (UNKL/KJA), also known historically as Yemelyanovo, is a major hub in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia, lying some 27 kilometres northwest of the city of Krasnoyarsk. It offers a single long, ILS-equipped runway and handles a substantial mix of passenger and cargo traffic, making it a significant destination for simulator pilots flying in Siberian Russia.
Krasnoyarsk International Airport, formerly named Yemelyanovo, is a large civil airport serving the city of Krasnoyarsk in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia. It has grown into one of the busiest airports in Siberia, acting as a hub for several Russian carriers and a focus city for a number of cargo and charter operators. For a simulator pilot, its combination of a very long single runway, full ILS approaches and a busy mixed passenger/cargo traffic pattern make it an interesting and realistic long-haul or regional destination in the Russian Far East/Siberia region.
The airport lies about 27 kilometres northwest of the city of Krasnoyarsk in Krasnoyarsk Krai. An unusual feature of the location is the presence of a smaller airfield, Cheremshanka, situated immediately adjacent to Krasnoyarsk International. Both airfields share the same runway orientation of 11/29, which can make them easy to confuse from the air; the principal distinguishing features are that Cheremshanka's runway is considerably shorter and that no taxiway links the two fields.
The airport has a single physical runway aligned 11/29, with reciprocal ends at 12,121 and 12,122 feet in length. It is a hard-surfaced, lit runway equipped with ILS on both directions, reflecting the airport's role as a major hub capable of handling large widebody and freighter aircraft.
Approach control is provided on 127.7 MHz as Krasnoyarsk Approach. Tower operates on 118.3 MHz as Krasnoyarsk Tower, with a further frequency of 121.9 MHz used for Krasnoyarsk Tower taxiing instructions. The runway is equipped with an ILS to support instrument approaches.
Construction of the airport began in 1970 and it opened for operations in 1980. A second terminal for transit and international passengers was launched in 2005, and by 2006 the original runway surface had been replaced with an asphalt-concrete layer reinforced with polymeric netting. In 2008 a new arrivals terminal was opened, and the runway lighting was reconstructed with the installation of centerline and touchdown zone lights. Lufthansa Cargo considered moving its Asian refuelling and distribution hub here from Astana, Kazakhstan, from 2007, and did establish operations before relocating them to Novosibirsk's Tolmachevo Airport in October 2016; AirBridgeCargo Airlines moved the other way, shifting its operations from Tolmachevo to Krasnoyarsk in January 2018. In November 2017 the airport's general director announced a rebranding from Krasnoyarsk-Yemelyanovo to Krasnoyarsk-International. In March 2019 Aeroflot signed an agreement with the regional government and the airport to develop a local international hub, with the project beginning in 2020, and on 31 May 2021 Aeroflot officially commenced hub operations at Krasnoyarsk.
The airport today handles a wide range of passenger and freighter aircraft, with facilities said to accommodate more than fifty aircraft types up to and including the Boeing 777, Boeing 767, Boeing 747, the Airbus A330 family, the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 and the Antonov An-124. It serves as a hub for several Russian carriers and as a focus city for a number of cargo, charter and low-cost operators, reflecting substantial passenger and cargo throughput in recent years.
