Gelendzhik Airport opened to passenger traffic on 5 June 2010. A new terminal building, designed by Doriana and Massimiliano Fuksas following a competition won in 2018, was completed in December 2021. Following the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, all civilian flights to and from the airport were suspended from 24 February 2022 as part of a wider closure of airports in southern Russia. Russia's Federal Air Transport Agency announced the airport's reopening for regular passenger flights, with some restrictions, from 10 July 2025, and commercial flights formally resumed on 18 July 2025 with the arrival of an Aeroflot flight from Moscow-Sheremetyevo.
Gelendzhik Airport now operates as a scheduled civilian airport following its 2025 reopening, with services to and from Moscow (Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo and Domodedovo), Saint Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Krasnoyarsk and other Russian cities operated by carriers including Aeroflot, Rossiya Airlines, Ural Airlines, Utair, Nordstar Airlines, Red Wings Airlines and Smartavia, some routes seasonal.
