Aviation at Jodhpur dates to 1924, when Maharaja Umaid Singh had a landing strip cleared near the under-construction Chittar Palace, later known as Umaid Bhawan Palace, for private flying. In 1931 he founded the Jodhpur Flying Club, the first flying club established by an Indian princely state, appointing Geoffrey Goodwin of Johannesburg as its first instructor; the club initially flew two De Havilland DH.60 Moths bought from the Delhi Flying Club and in 1932 became the first institution in India to take delivery of the De Havilland Tiger Moth. The aerodrome, built at a cost of 136,830 rupees, developed into an important staging post on the Karachi to Calcutta route operated jointly by Imperial Airways and Indian Trans-Continental Airways, and was also used by Air Orient and later Air France on their Paris to Saigon, Hanoi and Hong Kong services, and by KLM on its Amsterdam to Batavia route; by 1937 it was handling 877 aircraft a year. With the outbreak of the Second World War, Maharaja Umaid Singh placed the state's airfields at the disposal of the war effort, for which he was granted an honorary RAF commission and rose to Air Vice-Marshal. On 1 May 1942 the airfield and club were requisitioned as a military training centre with the formation of the No. 2 Elementary Flying Training School, and the base subsequently served as an RAF maintenance and staging post and later as a USAAF transit airfield supporting the China-Burma-India 'Hump' supply flights. After 1950 the airfield was upgraded following the formation of the Royal Indian Air Force, and Jodhpur went on to host the No. 2 Air Force Academy from 1949 to 1955 and the Air Force Flying College from 1957 to 1970.
Jodhpur Airport remains a dual-use field, operated for civil traffic by the Airports Authority of India while continuing as an active Indian Air Force station. The IAF base hosts squadrons of HAL Dhruv, HAL Prachand, HAL Chetak, Mil Mi-17 and Sukhoi Su-30MKI aircraft, together with a Garud Commando Force battalion, and was active during the 1999 Kargil War; a HAL Prachand unit, 143 Helicopter Unit, was inducted here in October 2022. On the civil side the airport handles scheduled domestic services from carriers including Air India and IndiGo, and a larger passenger terminal was inaugurated in July 2026 to accommodate rising traffic, alongside the existing terminal building.
