Jaipur International Airport (VIJP) is the main gateway to Rajasthan's capital, situated in the southern suburb of Sanganer some 10 km from the city centre. Operated under a public-private partnership by Jaipur International Airport Limited, an Adani Enterprises subsidiary, on a 50-year concession from the Airports Authority of India, it is a busy international and domestic hub with a single long, lit hard-surface runway well suited to a range of visiting aircraft.
Jaipur International Airport serves the city of Jaipur, capital of Rajasthan, from the southern suburb of Sanganer. Ownership rests with the Airports Authority of India, but since October 2021 operation, management and development have been contracted to Jaipur International Airport Limited, a special-purpose vehicle of Adani Enterprises, under a 50-year concession. For a simulator pilot the field is notable for its single very long runway, its role as a fog-season diversion airport for northern India, and its history of international recognition as one of the world's best airports in its passenger category.
The airport lies in the southern suburb of Sanganer, about 10 km (6.2 mi) from Jaipur city centre. As a large international airport handling scheduled airline traffic, it is served by tower and approach control, with published tower, approach and ATIS frequencies (see Radio & Navigation below).
Jaipur has a single physical runway, 09/27, measuring 11,164 ft and surfaced in hard standing (concrete/asphalt); both directions are lit, making the field usable for night operations. There is no ILS listed for the runway.
Pilots should expect ATIS on 126.6 MHz, with a tower frequency (handover) of 124.3 MHz and a combined tower/approach frequency of 125.25 MHz. The airport is fitted with CAT III-B approach lighting and runway visual range equipment, allowing operations in low-visibility conditions such as the winter fog that affects much of northern India.
Jaipur's airport was granted international status on 29 December 2005. Its apron can accommodate 14 aircraft, and a second terminal was inaugurated on 1 July 2009 before being expanded in 2019, when the runway width was increased by around 20 metres on each side and additional aerobridges and conveyor belts were installed. Between 2018 and 2024, the original terminal was upgraded and enlarged, its design reflecting traditional Rajasthani architecture. A 2016 proposal for a new greenfield airport at Shivdaspura, just outside the Jaipur Ring Road, was abandoned in May 2023 for lack of viability, with the acquired land redirected to an economic hub project instead. The airport was named World's Best Airport in the 2-to-5-million-passengers-per-annum category in 2015, 2016 and 2018 by Airports Council International. Its history includes an incident on 18 February 1969, when an overloaded Indian Airlines Douglas DC-3 crashed on take-off in either a downwind or crosswind condition, with all 30 people on board surviving; and on 5 January 2014, an Air India Airbus A320 operating flight AI-890 was diverted here due to fog at Delhi and suffered a burst tyre and wing damage on landing.
Jaipur continues to operate as a significant international and domestic airport, with the international terminal (T1) handling overseas services and the domestic terminal (T2) handling internal flights, the latter built in Rajasthani architectural style using sandstone and Dholpur stone. The field also functions as a diversion airport for flights affected by winter fog across northern India, aided by its CAT III-B approach lighting and runway visual range systems.
