Macau International Airport sits on reclaimed land at the eastern end of Taipa island, serving as the principal gateway to the Macau Special Administrative Region and a hub for Air Macau. Its single long runway, built entirely over water, makes it a distinctive VFR and IFR destination amid the Pearl River Delta's busy airspace. The field opened in 1995 and remains a key transfer point between mainland China, Taiwan and Southeast Asia.

Overview

Macau International Airport (ICAO: VMMC, IATA: MFM) is the sole airport serving the Macau Special Administrative Region, located at the eastern end of Taipa island and the surrounding reclaimed waters. It is the hub for Air Macau and has, since its opening, functioned as a busy transfer point for passengers travelling between mainland China, Taiwan and destinations across Southeast Asia. For a simulator pilot, the airport is notable for being constructed almost entirely on land reclaimed from the sea, giving approaches over open water on both runway directions, and for its position within the crowded Pearl River Delta traffic environment alongside Hong Kong.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies in the Pearl River Delta, on the eastern side of Taipa island and on land reclaimed from the neighbouring waters, close to mainland Zhuhai and within easy reach of Hong Kong across the estuary. Its approach and departure control is worked by Hong Kong radar, reflecting the close coordination required between the two territories' airspace in this densely trafficked corner of southern China.

Runways

Macau International Airport has a single physical runway, 16/34, oriented broadly north-south. It is a hard-surfaced, lit runway of approximately 9,846 feet in length on the 16 heading and 9,837 feet on the 34 heading, and it is equipped with ILS for both directions, allowing instrument approaches from either end.

Radio & Navigation

Aircraft approaching or departing Macau are worked by Hong Kong radar on the approach frequency of 126.3 MHz. The airport's ATIS broadcasts on 126.4 MHz, ground movements are handled on 121.725 MHz, and the tower operates on 118 MHz. Both runway ends are served by ILS, supporting instrument approaches in the often hazy or typhoon-affected conditions of the region.

History

Before Macau International Airport opened, the nearest international airport for travellers from Macau was Kai Tak in British Hong Kong, reached only by ferry. The airport was built on land reclaimed adjacent to the islands of Taipa and Coloane at a cost of around US$1 billion, and it began commercial operations on 9 November 1995, during Portuguese administration of the territory. The first departure was an Air Macau flight to Beijing, and the first arrival was a Malaysia Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur. The official inauguration ceremony followed on 8 December 1995, presided over by Portuguese president Mário Soares. In April 1996, TAP Air Portugal began services to Lisbon using Airbus A340s in cooperation with Sabena, routing through Brussels; the arrangement proved commercially difficult, the stopover was later shifted to Bangkok in 1997, and TAP withdrew from Macau altogether in 1998.

The Airfield Today

Macau International Airport remains the hub for Air Macau and hosts a range of regional carriers serving destinations in mainland China, Taiwan, Southeast Asia and beyond. The terminal was designed for an annual capacity of ten million passengers, with a processing capacity of up to 2,300 passengers per hour. Since 2016 the Macau government has been developing a phased master plan for the airport's expansion; the most visible construction work broke ground in 2020, and a further phase began in 2025 with completion expected around 2030.
