The airport was officially inaugurated in 1959 by the then transport minister Ganesh Man Singh, but it was subsequently closed due to inadequate infrastructure and runway safety concerns. Several later attempts to restore services were disrupted, largely because the runway lacked a blacktopped surface, and all flights ceased entirely from 2007. Between 2015 and 2016 the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal allocated a budget of Nepali Rupees 303 million for an upgrade, with the construction contract awarded in October 2016; a Shree Airlines flight marked the field's reopening on 23 May 2018, and regular scheduled flights began on 25 June 2018 after eleven years of complete shutdown.
Since its 2018 reopening the airport has operated with a single asphalt runway and has proved popular, with Buddha Air operating scheduled domestic flights to Kathmandu. It serves local residents as well as tourists visiting the nearby Koshi Barrage and Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, and is also used as a transit point for travel to nearby towns in India.
