Kadhdhoo Airport (VRMK) is a small domestic airfield on the island of Kadhdhoo in Laamu Atoll, roughly halfway along the chain between Male and Gan. Built as part of a wider effort to improve inter-island connectivity in the Maldives, it now serves as the air gateway to Haddhunmathi Atoll for a handful of domestic carriers. For a VFR sim pilot it offers a straightforward single-runway approach over open water with an atoll backdrop typical of the Maldivian domestic network.
Kadhdhoo Airport is a domestic aerodrome on the island of Kadhdhoo in Laamu Atoll, in the central Maldives. It is operated by Kadhdhoo Airport Company Limited (KACL), a state-owned company, and serves Haddhunmathi Atoll as a regional hub linking outlying islands to Male. Its single hard runway, low elevation and island setting make it a compact but visually striking destination for simulator pilots exploring the Maldivian domestic route network.
The airport sits on Kadhdhoo island, about 3.7 km (2.0 NM) northeast of Fonadhoo, within Laamu Atoll. It lies roughly halfway between Male and Gan along the Maldives archipelago, surrounded by the atoll's lagoon and open ocean, with no other significant airfields in close proximity.
Kadhdhoo has one physical runway, 03/21, measuring 4,004 ft and hard-surfaced, with lighting on both directions. There is no ILS available, so any approach must be flown visually or with basic navigation aids.
The airport is served by a tower frequency, TWR 119.6 MHz. No instrument landing system is fitted, so arriving traffic relies on visual approach procedures.
Construction of the runway at Kadhdhoo began on 11 January 1982 and the final surface layer was completed on 6 April 1986, with the airport formally opening on 10 December 1986. The project was funded primarily from the Maldivian government's own budget, supplemented by assistance from the United Nations Development Program, the International Civil Aviation Organization and the OPEC Fund. It was built during the presidency of Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom, whose government identified the difficulty of travel between Male and the outer islands, along with the need to counter illegal fishing incursions into Maldivian waters, as pressing national concerns. The runway was originally 762 metres long and 30 metres wide before later being extended to its current length.
Kadhdhoo continues to operate as a domestic airport, handling scheduled services that connect it to Male and other islands. Domestic carriers Flyme and Maldivian have both operated routes through Kadhdhoo, with Maldivian serving destinations including Gan, Kaadedhdhoo, Kooddoo and Male. The airport is designed to accommodate short take-off and landing aircraft up to 5,700 kg, reflecting its role as a small island-hopping hub rather than a facility for larger jet traffic.
