Krabi International Airport (ICAO: VTSG, IATA: KBV) sits on Thailand's Andaman coast in Krabi province, a short distance east of Krabi town, and serves as the principal air gateway to the beach resorts of Ao Nang, Railay and Koh Lanta. It is a substantial international field with a single long asphalt runway equipped with an ILS, handling a busy mix of domestic Thai carriers and long-haul international services.
Krabi International Airport lies on the west coast of southern Thailand in Krabi province, close to the town of Krabi itself. Operated by the Department of Airports, it is a full international airport rather than a light-aviation field, but its single long instrument runway, coastal approach and role as gateway to the Andaman beach resorts of Ao Nang, Railay Beach and Koh Lanta make it an interesting destination for a simulator pilot flying in southern Thailand. The airport is an operating base for Thai AirAsia and sees a wide mix of Thai domestic carriers and international airlines.
The airport is located in Nuea Khlong subdistrict, Nuea Khlong district, Krabi province, about 7 kilometres east of downtown Krabi. It sits at coordinates 8.1002 N, 98.9853 E at an elevation of 85 feet above mean sea level.
Krabi has a single physical runway, 14/32, measuring 9,813 feet with a hard (asphalt) surface. Both directions are lit, and an ILS is provided for runway 32.
Traffic at Krabi is worked on APP 120.05 MHz, TWR 118.6 MHz and GND 121.9 MHz, with ATIS broadcast on 29.9 MHz. An ILS is available for the approach to runway 32.
Krabi International Airport opened on 10 July 1999. Passenger traffic grew steadily through the 2000s and 2010s, reaching over 4.3 million passengers in 2017 against a terminal designed for three million. On 10 February 2016 the terminal suffered a power outage lasting more than six hours after backup generators failed to engage, forcing immigration staff to process passengers manually. In 2018 the airport was allocated 6.6 billion baht to build a third terminal, renovate the existing two terminals and car park, and expand aircraft parking and electrical infrastructure, and in 2019 the Department of Airports announced plans to double capacity to eight million passengers a year. Because of space constraints and the growth of the surrounding town, a new international airport has been proposed for Phang Nga province as a future alternative to Krabi.
Krabi remains one of Thailand's busiest airports, ranked sixth nationally by passenger numbers, with 2023 traffic of around 2.3 million passengers. It is an operating base for Thai AirAsia and is served by numerous domestic and international carriers, including Thai Airways International, Nok Air, Bangkok Airways, Thai Lion Air, Thai VietJet Air, AirAsia, flydubai, Etihad Airways, Air Arabia, IndiGo and seasonal European charter operators. The airport continues to expand its terminal and apron facilities to accommodate rising traffic.
