Phu Quoc International Airport is the main gateway to Phu Quoc Island in the Gulf of Thailand, southern Vietnam, opened in December 2012 to replace the old in-town Duong Dong Airport. It is a large, modern international field with a single long instrument runway capable of handling wide-body jets, and it now serves a growing list of domestic and international carriers.
Phu Quoc International Airport (ICAO: VVPQ, IATA: PQC) is the principal airport serving Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam's largest island, in the Gulf of Thailand. It replaced the older, more centrally located Duong Dong Airport in December 2012 and has grown into a substantial international gateway handling both domestic trunk routes to Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and other Vietnamese cities, and an expanding roster of regional and long-haul international services. For a visiting VFR or IFR pilot, its single long, ILS-equipped runway and busy commercial traffic mix make it a straightforward but active destination.
The airport sits on Phu Quoc Island in southern Vietnam, occupying nearly 900 hectares of the former commune of Duong To, about 9 kilometres south of the administrative centre of the Phu Quoc special zone. It lies roughly 10 kilometres from the site of the earlier Duong Dong Airport, which it replaced. The field is at coordinates 10.1697 N, 103.993 E, with an elevation of 16 feet above mean sea level.
The airport has one physical runway, 10/28, oriented east-west and 9,829 feet (roughly 3,000 metres) long with a hard paved surface. Both runway directions are served by ILS approaches, and the runway is capable of handling large wide-body aircraft such as the Airbus A350 and Boeing 747.
The tower frequency is 118.6 MHz. Both runway ends, 10 and 28, are equipped with ILS.
Construction began on 23 November 2008 under the Airports Corporation of Vietnam, with the airport designed by the Singaporean-US consulting firm CPG-PAE at a cost of around VND 16.2 trillion (about US$810 million). Built to replace the older Duong Dong Airport located closer to the town centre, the new airport was completed in November 2012 and opened for operations on 2 December 2012, with its inaugural flight following shortly afterwards. It was initially designed to handle about 2.5 million passengers a year, with a planned maximum capacity of 7 million. In November 2025 ownership of the airport passed from the Airports Corporation of Vietnam to Sun Group, which has been approved as the lead investor in a major expansion. That plan includes a new runway alongside the lengthening of the existing one, together with new terminals, intended to bring the airport up to ICAO Code 4E standard capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 747, 787 and Airbus A350, and to support Vietnam's hosting of APEC 2027 on the island.
Phu Quoc International Airport is a large, actively expanding international airport serving both domestic and international traffic, with airlines including Vietnam Airlines, VietJet Air, Sun PhuQuoc Airways, Bamboo Airways, Pacific Airlines, Vietravel Airlines and a wide range of foreign carriers operating scheduled and seasonal charter services to destinations across Asia and beyond. Following the 2025 ownership transfer to Sun Group, the field is undergoing major redevelopment, including a new runway, extension of the existing runway, and new terminal facilities, as part of preparations to host APEC 2027 and to raise annual capacity toward 18 million passengers.
