Yangon International Airport (VYYY/RGN) is Myanmar's principal gateway, sited at Mingaladon some 15 kilometres north of central Yangon. It is a busy single-runway international field with full instrument approach capability, handling a mix of long-haul, regional and domestic traffic through three terminal buildings.

Overview

Yangon International Airport, known locally by its Mingaladon location, is the busiest and largest airport in Myanmar and the country's principal point of entry for international air traffic. For a simulator pilot it offers a substantial single long runway with an ILS approach, a mix of jet airline traffic from across Asia and the Middle East, and the atmosphere of a major regional hub rather than a quiet general aviation field.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies in Mingaladon township, about 15 kilometres north of central Yangon, and sits within controlled airspace served by Mingaladon approach and tower control. As Myanmar's primary international airport it is a significant traffic node for arrivals and departures across the Yangon Flight Information Region, with approach control handling inbound and outbound flows on 119.7 MHz.

Runways

The field has a single physical runway, 03/21, oriented north-east/south-west and measuring 11,225 feet in length with a hard surface. Both directions are lit, and runway 21 is equipped with an ILS for instrument approaches, making it the primary instrument runway for arrivals in poor weather or at night.

Radio & Navigation

Air traffic services are provided under the callsign Mingaladon. Pilots should expect Mingaladon Approach on 119.7 MHz, the airport ATIS on 128.4 MHz, Mingaladon Ground on 121.9 MHz and Mingaladon Tower on 118.1 MHz. An ILS is available for runway 21, supporting instrument approaches to the field.

History

The airport traces its more recent transformation to a major expansion programme undertaken as Myanmar's air travel demand grew sharply through the 2010s, with passenger numbers rising from around 2.7 million capacity to over 3 million in 2012 and 4 million by 2014. In response, a new international terminal, T1, was constructed and officially opened by President U Thein Sein on 12 March 2016, lifting capacity to around 6 million passengers a year. A further domestic terminal, T3, was built in under a year following T1's opening, while the older T2 building, originally the airport's main international terminal, has continued in use for a mix of international and regional carriers. Passenger traffic peaked at 6.5 million in 2019 before the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, recovering to 3.25 million by 2023. Longer-term plans exist for an entirely new airport, Hanthawaddy International, on a larger site away from Yangon, intended eventually to supplement or succeed Mingaladon as the country's main gateway.

The Airfield Today

Yangon International Airport today operates as Myanmar's principal international gateway, with 13 airlines flying to 23 international destinations and five airlines operating domestic services. The airport is built with a stated future handling capacity of up to 20 million passengers a year once further terminal development, including a planned Terminal 2, is complete. Facilities are spread across multiple terminal buildings, with international traffic handled through T1 and T2 and domestic departures through T3.
