Komodo Airport (ICAO WATO, IATA LBJ) serves the town of Labuan Bajo on the western tip of Flores in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, acting as the principal gateway for visitors travelling to the Komodo National Park. It offers a single hard-surfaced runway aligned 17/35 and sits at a field elevation of 207 feet, with no ILS approach available.

Overview

Komodo Airport, officially named for its role as the departure point for tours to the nearby Komodo National Park and home of the Komodo dragon, lies close to the fishing town of Labuan Bajo on the west coast of Flores island in East Nusa Tenggara province, Indonesia. For a visiting VFR pilot the field is essentially a single-runway aerodrome handling a mix of domestic commercial traffic and general aviation movements, with the dramatic island and reef scenery of the Komodo archipelago forming its main draw.

Airspace & Location

The airport is situated on Flores island in the East Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia, immediately adjacent to Labuan Bajo town, which serves as the gateway to the Komodo National Park.

Runways

Komodo Airport has a single physical runway, 17/35, of 7,048 feet with a hard surface. There is no ILS available for instrument approaches.

Radio & Navigation

The field is served by an A/G frequency of 449.5 MHz under the callsign Labuhan Bajo Radio Info, with an additional information frequency of 122.7 MHz, also under the callsign Labuhan Bajo Info.

History

The airport was formerly referred to locally as "Pintu Budaya", meaning "Gate of Cultures", a name given by a former governor of East Nusa Tenggara, Dr Ben Mboi. Its official designation today is Komodo Airport, reflecting its function as the principal air gateway to the Komodo National Park and the wider Flores region.

The Airfield Today

Komodo Airport continues to operate as the main airport serving Labuan Bajo and the surrounding Komodo tourism area, handling scheduled commercial services in addition to any general aviation traffic.
