Brunei International Airport (WBSB/BWN) is the sole international gateway to Brunei Darussalam, sited close to the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, on the island of Borneo. It serves as the home base and hub for Royal Brunei Airlines and shares its single long runway with the Royal Brunei Air Force Base, Rimba. For a simulator pilot it offers a substantial 03/21 hard-surfaced runway with full ILS coverage, making it a straightforward but sizeable international field to fly into.
Brunei International Airport is the principal civil aerodrome of Brunei Darussalam, located on Borneo near the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan. It is operated by the Department of Civil Aviation of Brunei and serves as the home base and hub for Royal Brunei Airlines, while also sharing its facilities with the Royal Brunei Air Force Base, Rimba. Its single very long paved runway and full ILS make it a notable stop for simulator pilots flying wide-body or airliner routes across Southeast Asia.
The airport lies in Mukim Berakas, in the Brunei-Muara District, near Bandar Seri Begawan. The Royal Brunei Air Force Base, Rimba, sits opposite the main runway on the northern side of the aerodrome, within its environs, reflecting the shared civil/military use of the site.
Brunei International Airport has one physical runway, 03/21, a hard-surfaced strip approximately 11,999 to 12,000 feet in length, lit, and equipped with an ILS on both ends. There are no other runways at the field.
Radio services include Approach on 121.3 MHz, ATIS on 126.8 MHz, Ground on 121.9 MHz, and Tower on 118.7 MHz. The runway is fitted with an ILS for instrument approaches.
Commercial air transport in Brunei began in 1953, with flights connecting Brunei Town (present-day Bandar Seri Begawan) to Anduki near the oil town of Seria, operated from an old wartime runway site at Berakas built by the Japanese during the Second World War and then known as Brunei Airport. Rising demand for air travel through the 1970s overwhelmed the Berakas site, prompting construction of a new airport in Mukim Berakas from 1970. The new Brunei International Airport became operational in 1974, with a runway that was at the time one of the longest in the Far East. Royal Brunei Airlines, founded on 18 November 1974, took its first flight on 14 May 1975 using the newly built airport as its hub, marking the start of the country's modern commercial aviation era. The airport shares its site with the Royal Brunei Air Force Base, Rimba.
Brunei International Airport remains the country's only international airport and continues as the home base and hub for Royal Brunei Airlines, alongside its shared role hosting the Royal Brunei Air Force. The field has undergone phased terminal upgrades since the 2000s, including an expanded arrival hall completed in 2013, with further plans for a larger terminal to accommodate growing passenger numbers. The long 03/21 runway has also been the subject of upgrade work intended to allow larger wide-body aircraft to operate with greater ease.
