Brisbane International Airport (YBBN/BNE) is Queensland's principal international gateway, sited a few miles northeast of the Brisbane CBD near Moreton Bay. It is a large, radar-controlled aerodrome with two long parallel instrument runways, making it a significant destination for airline and general aviation traffic alike in a flight simulator environment. Its scale and full suite of ILS approaches give VFR and IFR pilots plenty to work with when planning arrivals or departures.

Overview

Brisbane International Airport, identified as YBBN (IATA: BNE), is the main airport serving Brisbane and South East Queensland, Australia. It sits close to Moreton Bay to the east of the city centre and functions as a major international and domestic hub. For a simulator pilot, YBBN offers the chance to fly into a large, fully controlled international airport with parallel runways, full ILS coverage and a busy mixed-traffic environment.

Airspace & Location

YBBN lies within controlled airspace appropriate to a major international aerodrome, close to the Queensland coast near Moreton Bay, northeast of the Brisbane city centre. The field is co-ordinated at -27.3842, 153.117 and sits at an elevation of 10 feet, reflecting its low-lying coastal position.

Runways

Brisbane has two parallel hard-surfaced runways, both lit and equipped with ILS on every direction. The western runway is 01L/19R, a hard-surface strip of 10,834 feet in length in both directions. The eastern runway is 01R/19L, with a published length of 11,478 feet on the 01R alignment and 11,704 feet on the 19L alignment. Both runways are suitable for the largest airliner types and give simulator pilots long, well-lit strips with instrument approaches available at each end.

Radio & Navigation

Brisbane's radio environment includes Approach/Departure on 124.35 MHz, ATIS on 113.2 MHz, a clearance-related frequency (CLD) on 118.6 MHz, a Clearance Delivery/Flight Service frequency on 125.7 MHz, Ground/Radar on 121.7 MHz and Tower on 120.5 MHz. The aerodrome is fully controlled, with ILS approaches published for both runways, supporting instrument arrivals in a wide range of weather conditions.

The Airfield Today

Brisbane International Airport operates as a large, radar-equipped international aerodrome handling a substantial mix of airline and general aviation movements, with full air traffic control services and instrument approaches available on both runways.
