Broken Hill Airport is a public aerodrome operated by the Council of the City of Broken Hill, serving the isolated mining city of Broken Hill in the far west of New South Wales. It handles scheduled airline services to Sydney, Adelaide and Dubbo, and is notable as a base for the Royal Flying Doctor Service's South Eastern Operations, as well as being heavily used by the surrounding mining industry. For a simulator pilot, it offers a classic outback Australian airfield experience: long distances between settlements, a substantial sealed runway suited to regional airliners, and a shorter crosswind strip typical of country aerodromes.
Broken Hill Airport sits within the airspace overseen by Melbourne Centre. The field is located a few kilometres southeast of the city of Broken Hill in remote western New South Wales, an area with sparse surrounding air traffic and few nearby controlled airfields.
The airport has two physical runways. The main runway, 05/23, is a hard-surfaced strip 8,235 feet long and lit, suitable for regional airliner operations. The secondary runway, 14/32, is also a hard surface but considerably shorter at 3,276 feet, and is also lit. There is no ILS approach at the field.
Pilots should use the CTAF on 126.7 MHz for traffic advisory calls in the vicinity of the aerodrome. A flight service frequency of 122.6 MHz is also available. The airport lies within Melbourne Centre airspace for enroute purposes.
