Hamilton Island Airport is a privately owned public aerodrome on Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays, Queensland, and is the only island airport in the group capable of handling regular jet services. It sits on reclaimed land close to the island's marina and town centre, with a single hard runway serving flights to and from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne as well as general aviation and charter traffic bound for the Great Barrier Reef.

Overview

Hamilton Island Airport, sometimes referred to as the Great Barrier Reef Airport, is a privately owned, public-use aerodrome operated by Great Barrier Reef Airport Pty Ltd. It is the main air gateway to Hamilton Island and the wider Whitsunday Islands, built largely on reclaimed land, and is notable among the Whitsunday group as the only island with its own commercial jet airport. For a visiting pilot it offers the novelty of an island approach with the Great Barrier Reef and Whitehaven Beach close by, alongside a single, well-lit runway sized for airline jets.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies on Hamilton Island in the Whitsunday group, off the Queensland coast, close to the town centre and marina and only a short distance from the resort area. It sits within the area worked by Brisbane Centre, and traffic is coordinated through a control tower on frequency 118.7 MHz.

Runways

The airport has a single physical runway, 14/32, measuring 5,597 feet and surfaced in hard standing (asphalt), and is equipped with lighting for night operations. There is no ILS approach available at the field.

Radio & Navigation

Pilots should expect to work Brisbane Centre en route, with the airport's own tower on 118.7 MHz for arrivals and departures. A common traffic advisory frequency is published on 126.7 MHz, an ATIS broadcast is available on 114.4 MHz, and a flight service frequency is listed as 135.5 MHz. There is no instrument landing system at Hamilton Island, so approaches are flown visually or on other non-precision procedures.

Visual Reference Points

The airport sits immediately adjacent to Hamilton Island's marina and town centre, both useful visual references when inbound, with the resort accommodation area a short distance beyond. The island's position within the Whitsunday group, surrounded by the waters of the Great Barrier Reef, makes it readily identifiable from altitude on the approach from the mainland.

History

Hamilton Island Airport opened in June 1984, with its 1,764-metre (5,787-foot) runway built to a standard capable of accommodating Boeing 747SP operations. Ansett Australia held exclusive rights to serve the airport as part of a 50 percent shareholding, and began services from Brisbane and Sydney using Boeing 737s. Ansett sold its shareholding to the BT Hotel Group in May 1998, which opened the door for Qantas to begin operating into the island. The airport suffered a significant downturn in September 2001 following the collapse of Ansett Australia, which had operated more extensively out of Hamilton Island than any other carrier, with services to Cairns, Townsville, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide all affected.

The Airfield Today

Hamilton Island Airport remains the principal air link for the Whitsundays, handling year-round scheduled jet services from Qantas, QantasLink and Virgin Australia to and from Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne, alongside charter and general aviation traffic, light aircraft, helicopters and seaplanes serving reef and island destinations. In the year to 30 June 2022 the airport handled around 500,000 passengers. Visiting pilots should check current arrangements for prior permission before planning a flight in, as the airport is privately operated.
