Weipa Airport lies on the Gulf of Carpentaria coast of Cape York Peninsula in far north Queensland, serving the town of Weipa some four nautical miles to the northwest. Operated by Rio Tinto Aluminium Weipa, it is a single-runway public aerodrome handling regular passenger services alongside general aviation traffic in this remote corner of Australia.

Overview

Weipa Airport is a public aerodrome operated by Rio Tinto Aluminium Weipa, reflecting the town's origins as a company mining settlement. It serves Weipa, the largest town on the Gulf of Carpentaria coast of the Cape York Peninsula, and provides the main air link for this remote part of far north Queensland. For a visiting VFR pilot it offers a straightforward single-runway layout in an isolated setting, with scheduled services connecting the town to Cairns and Brisbane.

Airspace & Location

The airfield sits about four nautical miles southeast of the town of Weipa on the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, Australia. The surrounding locality, known as Weipa Airport, is given over entirely to the runway and associated buildings and is separated from the rest of Weipa Town, being surrounded instead by the Mission River locality in the Shire of Cook. Air traffic in the area is worked by Brisbane Centre.

Runways

Weipa has a single physical runway, 12/30, measuring 5,393 feet on a hard surface and lit for night operations.

Radio & Navigation

Traffic at Weipa uses the CTAF on 126.7 MHz, with an RDO frequency of 122.1 MHz. The relevant area control service is Brisbane Centre. No instrument landing system is available at the field.

History

Construction of the airport's Flight Service Unit lighting building and power house began in 1972 and was completed in 1976. Under the Aviation Transport Security Act 2004, Weipa Airport was categorised as a Category 4 security controlled airport, and passenger screening was introduced there in 2014 following a 2010 change requiring regional airports handling aircraft of 20,000 kg or more to screen passengers.

The Airfield Today

Weipa continues to handle scheduled airline services: Alliance Airlines operates to Brisbane and Cairns, QantasLink flies to Cairns, and Skytrans Australia serves Aurukun, Cairns and Lockhart River. As a Category 4 security controlled airport, passengers are subject to screening procedures at the terminal.
